The Kalamazoo Wings will be San Jose’s secondary affiliate for 2009-10 season.
San Jose Sharks Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Wilson and Sharks Vice President and Assistant General Manager Wayne Thomas announced that the club has formalized a secondary affiliation with the Kalamazoo Wings of the ECHL, America’s Premier “AA” Hockey League.
“The San Jose Sharks are pleased to add this quality organization as our development affiliate, said Thomas. The Kalamazoo Wings have a long-standing tradition of excellence in its market on and off the ice. Head Coach Nick Bootland played in the Sharks organization in Cleveland and brings the same competitiveness and preparation as a coach as he did as a player.”
The ECHL began play in 1988-89 with five teams in three states and now has 20 teams ranging from New Jersey to Alaska.
The K-Wings enter their first season in the ECHL, but their history as a franchise runs all the way back to the 1974-75 season in the IHL. The team played in several leagues (IHL,CHL and UHL) for various spans of time over the last few decades. Prior joining the ECHL, the K-Wings were part of the new IHL in 2007-09.
“We are excited to align ourselves with the reigning President's Trophy champions and one of the most successful franchises on and off the ice in the National Hockey League," said Wings Stadium and Kalamazoo Wings President Paul L. Pickard. "We take great pride in having the opportunity in developing the Sharks' prospects and strive to continue their path to the next level."
