Sharks Stalock sharp in return
Stalock and Mashinter lead Sharks in 2-1 preseason win over Connecticut Whale
WORCESTER, MA – Goaltender Alex Stalock stopped 15 of the 16 shots he faced in two periods of play as the Sharks won their exhibition opener 2-1 over the Connecticut Whale at the Hart Center on the campus of Holy Cross on Thursday night.
Sena Acolatse and Brandon Mashinter scored for the Sharks and Thomas Heemskerk earned the victory, making seven saves in the third period in relief of Stalock.
Both teams played to a stalemate in the first period, with Worcester outshooting Connecticut 10-4 after one period of play. The Sharks and the Whale both had two power play opportunities, but both came up short, going 0-2 in the first. The best scoring opportunity of the period came during the Whale’s first power play when Danny Hobbs missed a wide open net. Alex Stalock turned away all four Connecticut shots, while the Whale’s Scott Stajcer stopped all 10 of the Sharks shots as well in a quick first period.
The Sharks struck first at 4:45 in the second period on a blast from the point on the power play by Acolatse (1st), assisted by Yanni Gourde and Jon Matsumoto, giving the Sharks a 1-0 lead. After killing off a double minor high-sticking call against Mashinter, Bracken Kearns was called for a roughing penalty at 17:34 of the second period. The Whale capitalized on the power play opportunity, with defenseman Sebastien Piche (2nd) sneaking one by Stalock through traffic, evening the score at 1-1.
Mashinter (1st) gave the Sharks a 2-1 lead on a put back in the third period after a big rebound was induced off the pads of Whale goalie Kyle Rank on a shot my defenseman Mikael Tam. Marek Viedensky also assisted on the goal. The Sharks held off a late attack and held on for the 2-1 victory.
Worcester’s preseason record stands at 1-0-0-0.
