Sharks, City of Worcester, combine efforts with Red Cross to help tornado victims
Join the fundraising effort at the DCU Center on Wednesday, May 25th from 12-6pm
WORCESTER, MA – Worcester Sharks President Michael A. Mudd announced today that the Worcester Sharks and the SMG managed DCU Center of Worcester will be hosting a fundraiser / raffle at the DCU Center on Wednesday, May 25th from 12pm-6pm to benefit the American Red Cross. All proceeds raised to be donated to the American Red Cross to support the victims of the tornado in Joplin, Missouri and numerous other disaster clients affected by disasters across the country.
Monetary donations will be collected outside of the DCU Center Box Office from 12-6pm on Wednesday, May 25. Take a shot in the SharkHead Shootout and meet FINZ! Worcester Tornadoes mascot Twister will also make a special appearance!
The American Red Cross will set up an information table in hopes of signing up future volunteers. Register Wednesday at the DCU Center to join the Red Cross Disaster Action team to ensure continued support and to be ready when the time comes. To date, 8,900 Red Cross workers have deployed to assist disaster clients since March 31st.
“The Worcester Sharks are excited to team up with our partners and the city of Worcester to help those in need in Joplin, Missouri,” said Mudd. “Although the Worcester Tornado happened over 50 years ago, it is still a vivid memory for all of those that survived. We felt it was important to help our neighbors in the south during this very difficult time.”

DONATE: With each $5 donation, donors will receive (1) raffle ticket to win some great prizes including;

In addition, UNOS Chicago Bar and Grille, located directly across from the DCU Center, will donate 20% of every bill to the Red Cross. (offer available for lunch and dinner on Wednesday, May 25)
The WXLO Street Team will be on site at the DCU Center from 12-2pm.

WORCESTER TORNADO:
Until Sunday evening, the Worcester tornado of June 9, 1953, which killed 94 people, was the last single tornado to kill 90 or more people. As of today, the Joplin tornado had killed at least 116 people, according to Missouri officials. The Worcester tornado ranks 20th on a list of deadly tornadoes since records have been kept, according to the National Weather Service.
