Worcester Sharks take a bite out of cancer!

The Sharks are already planning the the annual PINK IN THE RINK event will be held during the 2014-15 season!  More information to follow.


Some of the events that have taken place during the first three Pink in the Rink celebrations included:
 
-         The home ice of the Worcester Sharks is dyed pink.
-         Game worn pink jerseys were donned by the Worcester Sharks with all proceeds going to The Cup Crusaders.
-         The Cup Crusaders sold pink chuck-a-pucks with proceeds going to their cause.
-         The Worcester Sharks Booster Club donated the proceeds from their 50/50 raffle to The Cup Crusaders.
-         The Cup Crusaders Captain, Kathy Dirusso, dropped the ceremonial first puck prior to the game.
-         Cancer survivors wiwere recognized during the game on the ice and throughout the arena.
_        The Cup Crusaders hosted an information booth where everyone was welcomed to learn about the cause, sign up as a walk team member, or paint their hair pink, as well as other fun and exciting activities.
 
 
Who are The Cup Crusaders?
 
The Cup Crusaders, are a local team that raises money for the Susan G. Komen 3-day for the Cure®. The 3-Day is a 60-mile walk for women and men who want to make a personal difference in the fight to end breast cancer. The Cup Crusaders started in 2005 with the ultimate goal of being instrumental in helping to find a cure. To date, the team has raised over $1,000,000 for breast cancer research and awareness!
 
Breast Cancer Facts:
 
-Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer and is the leading cause of cancer death in women worldwide
 
-Nearly 1.4 million women are diagnosed with breast cancer globally each year.
 
-More than 458,000 people worldwide die from the disease each year.
 
-Somewhere in the world, a woman dies from breast cancer every 69 seconds.
 
-Over the last 25 years, breast cancer incidence rates have risen about 30 percent in westernized countries, although incidence rates decreased in the US from 1999-2006 in part due to lower use of postmenopausal combined hormone use.
 
-Nancy G. Brinker, Founder and CEO of Komen and Goodwill Ambassador for Cancer Control for the U.N.’s World Health Organization, is urging global health officials to include cancer in global health agendas.

-Breast cancer in men is rare but it is estimated there will be 2,140 cases of male breast cancer in 2011 along with 450 male deaths in the United States alone.
