PROVIDENCE, RI –Rookie Nathan Moon scored his first professional goal and added a shootout tally but it wasn’t enough as the Sharks were downed by the Providence Bruins in a shootout 4-3 at the Dunkin Donuts Center in Providence, RI.
Worcester also received goals from Curt Gogol and Mike Connolly along with 32 saves in net by Tyson Sexsmith in the first blemish of the season by the Sharks (2-0-0-1). Worcester led 2-0 and 3-1 before the Bruins barreled back to force overtime and eventually won in the shootout.
The Sharks came out charging hard in the first period and kept heavy pressure deep in the Bruins zone before getting a rebound score by Curt Gogol (2nd) at 10:31. The goal came after Nathan Moon pressured the Bruins defender into coughing up the puck resulting in a Worcester breakaway and eventual score by Gogol. Minutes later, Nathan Moon (1st) got his first professional goal, banging home a loose puck at 13:22 on the power play assisted by Brandon Mashinter and Mike Moore. Soon after, Curt Gogol (WOR) and Tyler Randell (PRO) dropped the mitts for a terrific battle at center ice. On the ensuing faceoff, Brandon Mashinter (WOR) and Lane MacDermid (PRO) exchanged blows and wanted more as the referees stepped in. The Sharks entered the locker room with all the momentum leading 2-0 and outshooting the Bruins 18-13.
The tempo was a bit slower in the second period as the Bruins found the net to cut on the Worcester lead to 2-1. Lane MacDermid (2nd) got the goal off a Worcester broken play at 6:17 of the second period. His rebound goal was assisted by Kirk MacDonald. Tempers flared as both teams had numerous scrums in front of both nets. The Sharks led 2-1 through 40 minutes of play.
The action got started early as both teams got goals in the opening two minutes of the third period. Worcester took a 3-1 lead with a Mike Connolly (2nd) tally assisted by Brodie Reid and veteran Ben Guite. Providence responded just moments later when Calle Ridderwall (1st) got his first professional goal assisted by Craig Cunningham on a deflection past Sexsmith. With the extra attacker, Providence fought the rush and managed to deflect a point shot past Sexsmith with 29.1 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game at 3-3 to force overtime.
Both teams gave valiant efforts in overtime but no one prevailed including a Sean Sullivan chance point blank on Anton Khudobin.
In the shootout, Jamie Arniel (PRO) and Nathan Moon (WOR) were the only ones to score through 4 rounds. The fifth round saw Worcester’s Ben Guite get stopped by Bruins Goaltender Anton Khudobin and Connor Camper put the nail in the coffin with a 5th round shootout goal for the Bruins.
