Sharks Look to Stay Perfect This Weekend
Sharks Look to Stay Perfect This Weekend
By Andrew Stepanek
The Worcester Sharks don’t skip a beat as they head right back into action this weekend with games on Friday and Saturday nights.
Friday, the undefeated Sharks ride the wave into Providence to face the streaking Providence Bruins. The Bruins started the season in hibernation as they got off to a 0-3 start but have gotten it together to win their last two games. The Bruins got some redemption last Saturday with a 4-1 runaway win against Springfield and a 3-2 shootout victory last Sunday, downing the Portland Pirates.
This Friday marks the 2nd game of the 2011-12 season between the Sharks and the much rivaled Bruins. It promises to have plenty of excitement. The first meeting was Worcester’s season opener on October 9, 2011 in Providence and saw the Worcester Sharks down the Bruins by a score of 4-1.
Curt Gogol, Benn Ferriero, Brandon Mashinter, and Sean Sullivan all had goals in the affair. Tyson Sexsmith showcased his solid goaltending by making 19 of 20 saves with a .950 save percentage.
The game had plenty of rough stuff as Sharks tough guys Curt Gogol and Jimmy Bonneau made their presence known with each getting their first fighting majors of the season.
Be sure to tune in as the Sharks try to remain undefeated and stack up a 2-0 record against Providence.
Saturday, The Sharks return home to the DCU Center for a 7:00pm tilt versus the Manchester Monarchs.
This is the first of 12 meetings between the Sharks and Monarchs this season. Manchester is off to a decent start going 3-2 through last Sunday. The Monarchs have gotten large lopsided wins against Portland by a score of 5-1 and a 7-1 beating of the Providence Bruins. Their most recent outing resulted in a 5-3 loss to Springfield last Sunday.
The Sharks hold an overall record 25-20-3 record against the Monarchs while going 7-5-0 last season. Manchester has a scorer in Andrei Loktionov who has racked up eight points in the 2011-12 seasons first five games. This puts him tied for third, with 5 other skaters, in the American Hockey League in points.
Enforcers to watch out for include Richard Clune who returns to the Monarchs and promises to be a thorn in any team’s side. Clune tallied 22 fighting majors last season and has wasted no time in getting into three bouts in 2011-12. Justin Johnson also returns to the Manchester lineup. Johnson had 24 fighting majors in 2010-11 but has stayed clear of the rough stuff so far in this year’s campaign.
The Worcester Sharks hope to continue their winning ways and come out of this weekend as the only undefeated team in the American Hockey League. You don’t want to miss this.
