Worcester, MA – James Livingston scored his first two professional goals in the third period and the Sharks scored four power play goals in a complete team effort as Worcester defeated the Albany Devils in fine fashion by the score of 6-1 in the Sharks 6th season home opener at the DCU Center on Saturday evening.

Worcester also received goals from Benn Ferriero, Matt Irwin, Ben Guite, and Mike Connolly as the Sharks improved to 3-1-1-1 in home openers in their six year history in the AHL. The game featured several fights and a combined 103 penalty minutes as the Sharks improved to 2-0-0-0.

The Sharks came out buzzing in the opening period out shooting the Devils 10-5 and taking a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes. Benn Ferriero (2nd) fired a shot from the right wall on a tough angle that snuck through the pads of Jeff Frazee at 6:07 to give Worcester a 1-0 lead. Just 2:45 later on the power play, Matt Irwin’s bomb from the blue line found its way through traffic and past Frazee for a 2-0 lead. Vladimir Zharkov (1st) got the Devils on the board at 15:39 with a rebound score at 15:39 after a nice initial stop by Tyson Sexsmith. The Devils did not register a shot on goal in the first 15 minutes of the opening period.

Ben Guite (1st) scored his first goal in a Sharks uniform to give Worcester a 3-1 lead at 13:24 after a Sean Sullivan shot was deflected in front of the Albany crease on the power play. Tempers flared at 14:51 with a 10 player scrum which was highlighted by a Nick Petrecki takedown of former Shark Jay Leach at center ice. The Sharks took a two goal lead into the 2nd intermission.

James Livingston (1st) scored his first professional goal just 28 seconds into the third period to give Worcester a 4-1 advantage. Mike Connolly (1st) deflected home his first professional tally on a Matt Irwin shot from the point on the power play at 1:45 to give the Sharks a four goal edge. James Livingston (2nd) finished off the scoring at 5:32 with a nice jam in front past Frazee for a 6-1 advantage. Cam MacIntyre and Matthew Corrente dropped the mitts in a feisty third period that saw 54 minutes of penalties handed out.
