Sharks teeth look sharp in season opener
Opening night at the DCU Center is Saturday, October 15th at 7pm vs. the Albany Devils
Shark Snap Shot:
The Worcester Sharks chomped two out of a possible two points last week to kick-off their 6th season of hockey in Worcester with a 4-1 win at Providence on Sunday (1-0-0-0). The Sharks improved to 4-1-0-1 in season openers with the win at the Bruins. The Worcester Sharks player of the week nominee is rookie forward Curt Gogol as he scored his first professional goal (first goal for the Sharks this season) and his first professional fighting major.

Tyson Sexsmith made 20 saves and the Sharks got goals from four different players in a complete team effort as Worcester defeated the Providence Bruins 4-1 in the Sharks season opener at the Dunkin Donuts Center in Providence, Rhode Island on Sunday afternoon. Worcester received goals from Curt Gogol, Sean Sullivan, Brandon Mashinter, and Benn Ferriero as the Sharks improved to 4-1-0-1 in openers in their six year history in the AHL.
Sharks in the Atlantic: The Sharks are swimming in 2nd place with two points (1-0-0-0) in the Atlantic Division through one game, which is two points behind the first place St. John’s Ice Caps (2gp), and tied with the Portland Pirates (1gp), and the Manchester Monarchs (2gp). The Sharks lead the 5th place Bruins (2gp) by two points to round out a very choppy Atlantic Division.

*400 WINS!….With the 4-1 victory vs. Springfield on November 1, 2009, head coach Roy Sommer became just the 4th coach in AHL history to reach the 400 win plateau.
*500 WINS!.... Coach Roy Sommer is just 21 wins away from 500 in his AHL coaching career.
*1000 GAMES… With the 3-1 victory at Springfield on January 14, 2011, head coach Roy Sommer became just the 4th coach in AHL history to reach the 1,000 games plateau.

*In Coach Sommer’s first AHL victory…. The Kentucky Thoroughblades defeated the Albany River Rats 6-4 at the Rupp Arena in Lexington, Kentucky on October 17th 1998. Coincidentally, Assistant Coach David Cunniff recorded an assist as a member of the River Rats in the hockey game.
*Assistant Coach David Cunniff has joined Coach Sommer in 325 of the 479 victories (68%)… Coach Cunniff filled in for Roy in a 3-2SOW in Springfield on December 29, 2010 as coach Sommer was in California attending his father’s funeral.

*Captains for the 2011-12 season: Mike Moore was named the Sharks 4th captain in team history on Feb 11, 2011 and was named captain again before the start of the 2011-12 season. Alternate captains for this season: veteran forward Ben Guite and forward John McCarthy.
*From east to west….. The Worcester Sharks had 13 different players (36 call-ups) receive at least one call up last season to San Jose… Currently; Andrew Desjardins, Jamie McGinn, Logan Couture, Jason Demers, Joe Pavelski, Marc-Edourd Vlasic, Frazer McLaren, Doug Murray, and Tommy Wingels are all former Worcester Sharks that are currently playing with the San Jose Sharks.
*Season Openers… the Sharks improved to 4-1-0-1 in season openers after their 4-1 win on Sunday!

*Starting Goalies… Tyson Sexsmith allowed just one goal on 21 shots on Sunday in Providence to become the first goaltender to allow less than two goals in a Sharks opener. The San Jose Sharks took Game 1 of their regular season 6-3 vs. the Phoenix Coyotes on Saturday night at the Shark Tank. Former Worcester Sharks players Andrew Desjardins and Joe Pavelski each scored two goals and Thomas Greiss made 26 saves in net for the win.
