Sharks Sharp in 4-1 Season Opener
Sharks opening night at DCU Center Saturday, Oct 15th vs. Devils
PROVIDENCE, RI – Tyson Sexsmith made 19 saves and the Sharks got goals from four different players in a complete team effort as Worcester defeated the Providence Bruins 4-1 in the Sharks season opener at the Dunkin Donuts Center in Providence, Rhode Island on Sunday afternoon.
Worcester received goals from Curt Gogol, Sean Sullivan, Brandon Mashinter, and Benn Ferriero as the Sharks improve to 4-1-0-1 in openers in their six year history in the AHL.
The Sharks came out buzzing in the opening period out shooting the Bruins 14-4 and taking a 1-0 lead. Curt Gogol (1st) scored his first professional goal with a terrific shot from the left circle at 14:35 that beat Anton Khudobin through the pads after a great feed into the zone by Ryan Del Monte. Nick Petrecki received the secondary assist with a smart first pass out of the Worcester zone.
Worcester grabbed a 2-0 lead after a Sean Sullivan (1st) blast from 40 feet screamed through traffic and into the back of the net at 4:10. Minutes after the goal, the Sharks’ new enforcer, Jimmy Bonneau dropped the mitts in a lengthy battle with Lane MacDermid at 6:36. The Sharks went ahead 3-0 at 15:37 on the power play after rookie Nathan Moon found Brandon Mashinter (1st) alone in front of the net. Mashinter ripped the puck top shelf for the Sharks first power play goal of the season. The Bruins got on the board late in the middle frame after Lane MacDermid (1st) sent a wrist shot from 15 feet top shelf past Tyson Sexsmith at 18:54. The Sharks led 3-1 after two periods of play outshooting the black and gold 24-10.
Benn Ferriero (1st) gave the Sharks a 4-1 edge early in the 3rd period with a nice deflection on Nick Petrecki’s shot from the point after a faceoff win deep in the Bruins zone. Tyson Sexsmith made 10 saves in the third period to seal the Sharks victory.
