The Worcester Sharks chomped four out of a possible six points last week in three games highlighted by the first AHL victory by goaltender Harri Sateri in Providence on Sunday. Worcester kicked off a 3-in-3 weekend at home with a 2-0 win over the Monarchs at the DCU Center on Friday, followed by a tough 4-1 defeat in the claws of the Bruins in front of 8,075 at the DCU Center on Saturday.  The busy weekend ended on a high note with a 2-1 victory over the Bruins on Sunday at the Dunkin Donuts Center behind Jamie McGinn’s two points (1-1-2) and 33 saves by Harri Sateri. The Sharks player of the week nominee was forward T.J. Trevelyan; as he scored two of the five goals scored by the Sharks last week. The Sharks enter the week trailing the Connecticut Whale in the Atlantic Division by two points for the 3^rd and final guaranteed playoff spot in the division with 3 games remaining.

The Sharks started an important 3-in-3 weekend with a hard fought 2-0 victory over the second place Manchester Monarchs at the DCU Center Friday night. John McCarthy scored both goals for Worcester with Brandon Mashinter adding two assists for the multi-point game. Carter Hutton made 27 saves for the shutout and his 11^th victory of the season.

The Sharks fell 4-1 to the Providence Bruins in front of the 2^nd largest crowd in Sharks history (8,075 fans) at the DCU Center on Saturday night.  T.J. Trevelyan was the only goal scorer for Worcester and Carter Hutton had 22 saves in the Sharks loss. 

The Sharks defeated the Providence Bruins 2-1 in front of 7,332 fans at the Dunkin Donuts Center on Sunday afternoon. TJ Trevelyan and Jamie McGinn were the goal scorers for the Sharks while Harri Sateri made 33 saves in a stellar individual effort for his first win in the AHL.

 

 

Sharks in the Atlantic: The Sharks are swimming in 4th place with 84 points (36-29-4-8) in the Atlantic Division through 77 games, which is 12 points behind the first place Portland Pirates (75gp), 11 points behind the 2^nd place Manchester Monarchs (77gp), and 2 points behind the 3rd place CT Whale (77gp). The Sharks lead the 5^th place Bruins (77gp) by 8 points, 13 points better than the Falcons (76gp) followed by the 7^th place Sound Tigers with 65 points (76gp) to round out a very choppy Atlantic Division.

 

The Sharks are in a battle for the third and final guaranteed playoff spot in the Atlantic Division.

 

In 2010-11, the AHL will have 16 teams participating in the postseason.

In each division, the fourth-place team will play the first-place team in the division semifinals, while the second-place team plays the third-place team.

There are two possible exceptions to the qualification rules in 2010-11: in each conference, if the fifth-place team in the eight-team division (East) finishes with more points than the fourth-place team in the seven-team division (Atlantic), it would cross over and compete in the seven-team division's playoffs.

(If the fifth-place team in the eight-team division produces more points than the third-place team in the seven-team division, then the team that finishes first in the seven-team division shall play the team that finishes third in the seven-team division.)

Division semifinal winners face off in the division finals. The winner of the East Division final plays the winner of the Atlantic Division final in the Eastern Conference final, while the winner of the North Division final plays the winner of the West Division final in the Western Conference final. Conference final winners meet in the Calder Cup Finals.

*Braun in NHL… Justin Braun made his NHL debut in Vancouver on Nov 26… Justin played 16:56 in the loss to the Canucks… Braun recorded two assists in his 2^nd NHL game in a 4-3W in Edmonton on Nov 24 and was the #3 star with a +2 rating in 22:48 of action…. Braun has played in 16 games with San Jose (1-8-9) this season. His first NHL goal came in a 4-0 win in Ottawa against Pascal LeClaire on December 2. Justin Braun represented the Sharks at the 2011 AHL All-Star Classic in Hershey and fired a 95.6mph shot in the hardest shot competition. Justin is currently on recall to San Jose.

 

*Sullivan Scores… Sharks defenseman Sean Sullivan has 12 goals (2 GWG) this season from the Sharks blue line.   The 26-year-old from Boston, MA had 12 goals and 49 points in San Antonio last season. *Irwin scoring… Sharks rookie defenseman Matt Irwin has 10 goals and 19 assists from the Sharks blue line this season in 69 games.  The rookie from UMASS-Amherst received his first NHL recall on Feb 18^th but did not dress for San Jose.

 

*Give me Moore… #8 has played 192 games in a Worcester Sharks jersey and has compiled 52 points (10-42-52) and 278 penalty minutes. His +33 is 4^th best in Sharks history. He recorded his first professional two goal game on November 14 vs. Norfolk and was the #1 star. Moore scored his first NHL goal in his 2^nd NHL game in a 4-3OTL in Colorado on November 17^th. Mike scored at 9:14 of the 2^nd period on a slap shot assisted by Dany Heatley on Peter Budaj to give the Sharks a 3-1 lead. He has also been the Sharks Man of the Year for the previous two seasons for his continued work in the Worcester community. Moore was named the 4^th captain in Sharks history on Feb 11^th before the Sharks defeated the Falcons 5-0 in Albany.

 

*Who’s your BF?... Sharks 2^nd year forward Benn Ferriero  started his sophomore campaign on FIRE with NINE goals through 10 games to lead the Worcester Sharks offensively. Benn has played 29 games with the San Jose Sharks and has five goals, four assists and +7.   He currently has 16 goals with Worcester in 41 games.

 

*Sheriff back in town… Frazer McLaren returned to Worcester on Nov 20 after beginning the season with the San Jose Sharks. Frazer has played in 5 games in a Worcester Sharks sweater accumulating 28 points (13-15-28) and 417 penalty minutes. McLaren ranks 2nd all time in penalty minutes by a Worcester Sharks player (Brennan Evans 381, and Brad Staubitz 462). The Sherriff missed 21 games due to a lower body injury before returning to the lineup on January 11 vs. Albany.

 

*Sharks in the Atlantic… the Sharks have a 29-20-4-6 record against Atlantic Division prey this season.

 

*Good when leading… the Sharks have a 21-5-1-1 when leading after the 1st period of play and a 28-1-1-1 when leading after the 2^nd period of play this season.

*Reunion of sorts…Jonathan Cheechoo returns to the Sharks organization in Worcester and will once again play for head coach Roy Sommer…. Coach Sommer coached Cheechoo in Kentucky and Cleveland in the AHL before his NHL days. Before this season, Cheechoo had 56-63-119pts in 137 games under Coach Sommer. “Cheech” ranks 1st in Worcester with 47 points (18-29-47) in 55 games this season. Jonathan has missed the last 17 games due to injury.

*Welcome from Finland!... San Jose Sharks draft pick Harri Sateri arrived in Worcester on March 13th after his third season with Tappara Tampare in the Finnish Elite League wrapped up. The 21 year-old from Toijala, Finland has never played a professional game in North America. The 6-foot-1 190lbs goaltender was drafted by San Jose in the 4th round (106th overall) in the 2008 NHL draft. He played 37 games with Tappara Tampere and had a 2.96GAA and a .910 save%. In 2009-10, he helped team advance to the second round, eliminating Jokerit in the first round of the SM-Liiga playoffs…10th in the playoffs in goals-against average and T-1st in games played…Finished the regular season tied for 13th in the league in save percentage (.915)…Career 2008-09: Led Tampere in save percentage (.921) and goals-against average…T-1st on Tampere in shutouts…U-20 World Jr. Tourney: Made starts in preliminary round against Sweden and Russia...2007-08: Represented Finland at the Under-20 World Junior Championships...Attended Finland’s 2008 National Junior Championship Development Camp... Sateri wears #35 with Worcester and made his North American Debut in the third period in Providence on March 18^th, making 22 saves on 23 shots and stopped Trent Whitfield on a penalty shot. Sateri made his first start in Wilkes-Barre Scranton on March 19^th making 21 saves on 25 shots in a 5-3 loss to the Penguins…. Sateri won his first AHL game taking home the #1 star with 33 saves in 2-1 victory in Providence on April 3.

 

*Young Guns… the Sharks have dressed 19 rookies, including three from UMASS-Amherst (Braun, Irwin, and Marcou) and two from UMASS-Lowell (Hutton and Schaus).

*Stalock the stopper… Alex Stalock grabbed his 50^th professional win vs. Portland on December 5….He has allowed just 64 goals in his last 29 games (2.20 goals against per game) after allowing 25 goals in his first 7 games…. at the time of his injury, Alex ranked 1st in the AHL with 2397 minutes played and 2nd in saves with 1025. Stalock is a perfect 4-for-4 stopping penalty shots, including two this season (the Bruins Roussel on Oct 23 and the Monarchs Elkins on Dec 19). Stalock left the game injured on February 4^th vs. Manchester and is out for the rest of the season after season ending surgery on Feb 14.

 

*Al in the NHL… Alex Stalock made his NHL debut in San Jose on Tuesday, Feb 1. Stalock came in relief of Niemi down 3-0 midway through the 2^nd period vs. Phoenix.   Stalock made 9 saves and got the victory in a wild come from behind 5-3 win over the Coyotes.

 

*Alex Stalock hits 100 games…. Stalock became just the 2^nd Sharks goaltender to dress in 100 games on January 28  joining Thomas Greiss… Alex is 57-36-6 for the Sharks in those 100 games.

 

*Mr. Dependable…. Andrew Desjardins had dressed in 188 straight games for Worcester breaking the record held by Derek Joslin (114 games)…. Desjardins had the 2^nd longest streak in the AHL (Nick Dodge in Charlotte) before his first NHL recall on January 2, 2011. Andrew is currently on recall to San Jose.

 

*Monster Mash… Sharks power forward Brandon Mashinter received his first NHL recall on December 29, 2010. Mash made his NHL debut on December 29^th in Minnesota (13 shifts and 7:17 of ice) in the Sharks 5-3 loss. Brandon has played 12 games in San Jose this season with no points and two fighting majors during his NHL recalls. Mash has recorded 10/10 (goals/fights) in his 2^nd straight season.
