The Sharks chomped four out of a possible eight points last week in four games highlighted by a 5-2 victory over the first place Monarchs on Sunday at the DCU Center behind Jamie McGinn’s two goals. Worcester began the week with a 4-2 loss at home to the Falcons on Wednesday, followed by back-to-back shootout losses to the Pirates on Friday and the Phantoms on Saturday. The Sharks player of the week nominee was forward Jamie McGinn; as he went 3-1-4pts in four games with a +1 rating. Worcester finished the month of February 5-3-1-2, despite using five different goaltenders. The Sharks enter the week in 3rd place in the Atlantic Division, the last guaranteed playoff spot in the division.

Worcester extended their point streak to three games and concluded a 4-in-5 week with an impressive 5-2 win over the division leading Manchester Monarchs Sunday afternoon in front of 5,052 fans at the DCU Center.  With the victory, the Sharks jumped back into a playoff spot, claiming 3^rd place in the Atlantic Division. Jamie McGinn had two goals, and came within a penalty shot of a hat trick, with Tommy Wingels, Nick Schaus and TJ Trevelyan also scoring for the Sharks. Tyson Sexsmith made 25 saves and grabbed the #3 star honors to record his first win of the season with Worcester.

Sharks in the Atlantic: The Sharks are swimming in 3rd place with 65 points (27-21-3-8) in the Atlantic Division through 59 games, which is 16 points behind the first place Manchester Monarchs (63gp), 10 points behind the 2^nd place Portland Pirates (58gp), and one point ahead the 4th place CT Whale (60gp) and Falcons (61gp). The Bruins (57pts in 61gp) are right in the mix of things followed by the 7^th place Sound Tigers with 49 points (60gp) to round out a very choppy Atlantic Division.

 

 *400 WINS!….With the 4-1 victory vs. Springfield on November 1, 2009, head coach Roy Sommer became just the 4^th coach in AHL history to reach the 400 win plateau.

 

*1000 GAMES… With the 3-1 victory at Springfield on January 14, 2011, head coach Roy Sommer became just the 4^th coach in AHL history to reach the 1,000 games plateau.

*Worcester Sharks Head Coach Roy Sommer, who plays a major role in developing players for the San Jose Sharks, is currently the longest-tenured coach (13^th season) in the American Hockey League. His current regular season record is now: 469-423 -48 -43 -36. (W-L-T-OTL-SOL)

 

 

*Assistant Coach David Cunniff has joined Coach Sommer in 315 of the 469 victories (67%)… Coach Cunniff filled in for Roy in a 3-2SOW in Springfield on December 29, 2010 as coach Sommer was in California attending his father’s funeral.

 

*Gone but not forgotten… Before the Sharks on January 10^th, there was a moment of silence for former Sharks and Falcons player Tom Cavanagh who passed away on January 6th in Providence, RI. Tom Cavanagh played for coach Sommer in Cleveland, and then came to Worcester when the franchise relocated for the 2006-07 season. He played for the Sharks through the end of the 2008-09 season and finished his Worcester career with point totals of 46-92-138. He remains the team's all-time leader in points and assists. A graduate of Toll Gate High in Warwick, R.I., and then Harvard University, Cavanagh eventually went on and played for the San Jose Sharks. Our thoughts and prayers to the entire Cavanagh family.

 

*Captains for the 2010-11 season:  Jay Leach was the captain before he was traded to New Jersey on Feb 9^th and Mike Moore was named the Sharks 4^th captain in team history on Feb 11^th. Assistant Captains on the road: Jonathan Cheechoo (1^st  year) and Nick Petrecki (1^st year). Assistant Captains at home: Andrew Desjardins (1^st year) and Sean Sullivan (1^st year)… Dan DaSilva, Cory Quirk, Joe Loprieno, and Frazer McLaren have also worn the assistant captain “A”.

 

*From east to west….. The Worcester Sharks have had 13 different players (28 call-ups) receive at least one call up this season to San Jose… Currently; John McCarthy, Justin Braun, Brandon Mashinter, Carter Hutton, Logan Couture, Jason Demers, Derek Joslin, Joe Pavelski, Devin Setoguchi, Marc-Edourd Vlasic, and Doug Murray are all former Worcester Sharks that are currently playing with the San Jose Sharks.

 

*New Faces… On Feb 8^th, the Sharks sent Jay Leach and Steve Zalewski to the Devils for Patrick Davis and Mike Swift.   

 

·         Patrick Davis, a six-foot-two, 195-pound native of Sterling, MI was originally drafted by the New Jersey Devils in the fourth round (99^th overall) of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft. He has played in nine career NHL games with the New Jersey Devils over two seasons (2008-2010), posting one goal. This season with the Albany Devils, Davis, 24, posted 13 points (3 goals, 10 assists) and 20 penalty minutes in 40 games. Davis will wear number 15 with Worcester. Patrick scored his first goal as a Shark on Feb 19 in a 3-2OTL in Springfield.

 

·         Mike Swift, a five-foot-eight, 175-pound native of Peterborough, Ontario has spent the past three seasons with Lowell/Albany after signing with the Devils organization as a free agent in April 2008. This season, he was second on the Albany team in scoring (T-first in goals) with 28 points (16 goals, 12 assists) and 48 penalty minutes in 48 games. Mike led the Lowell Devils in goals last season and will wear number 16 with Worcester. He scored his first goal as a Sharks on Feb 20 in a 4-3SOW in Providence.

 

*Home openers… the Sharks are 2-1-1-1 in five home openers at the DCU Center, including a 4-3 overtime loss to the Bruins on Saturday.  Worcester was the last team in the AHL to host their home opener, and October 23^rd was the Sharks latest home opener on record. The Sharks lost in a shootout 5-4 to Portland in 2006, defeated Portland 3-2 in 2007, defeated the Bruins in overtime 3-2 in 2008, and lost to Lowell 7-5 in 2009. 

 

*Score first… the Sharks have scored FIRST 29 times in 59 games this season (22-6-0-1) after scoring first in 42-of-80 games last season (34-6-0-2)…. Benn Ferriero (4) Jonathan Cheechoo (4), Kevin Henderson (2), T.J. Trevelyan (4), Sean Sullivan (2), Dan DaSilva (2), Andrew Desjardins (3), Matt Irwin (1), Steve Zalewski (1), Chris Lawrence (1), Brandon Mashinter (1), Just Braun (1), Jamie McGinn (2), and Joe Loprieno (1) have the others.

 

*Slim Margins… 31 of the Sharks 59 games have been decided by one goal this season… Worcester is 15-5-3-8 in those 31 games.

 

*Don’t allow 4… The Sharks are 26-8-2-5 when they allow three goals or less in a game…BUT… Worcester is 1-13-1-3 when they allow four goals or more.

 

*Can’t score 4… The Sharks had been held under four goals in 20 out of 22 games (49GF) from Dec 17^th – Feb 6th and had a 9-10-1-2 record during that stretch.

 

*Quarter Mark… the Sharks finished the 1^st quarter of the AHL season with a 10-6-1-3 record good for 24 points through 20 games. It was the best first quarter by the Worcester Sharks in five seasons.

 

*through 40 games… the Sharks finished the 1^st half of the AHL season with a 19-14-2-5 record good for 45 points through 40 games. It was the 2^nd best first half by the Worcester Sharks in five seasons. Worcester was 18-15-1-6 (43pts) in 2006-07, 18-16-3-3 (42pts) in 2007-08, 21-18-0-1 (43pts) in 2008-09, and 24-13-1-2 (51pts) through 40 games last season.

 

*T.J. reaches 100…. Sharks forward T.J. Trevelyan skated in his 100^th game for the Sharks on January 10^th and scored his 35^th goal as a Shark in the 3-2 shootout loss to Springfield. Trevelyan currently has 14 points in his last 14 games (7-7-14).

 

*Z reached 200 games… Steve Zalewski became just the 5^th player in Sharks history to hit the 200gp plateau in the Sharks 3-1 win in Springfield on Friday, January 14, 2011. “Z” had skated in 210 games for Worcester, surpassing Riley Armstrong for 2^nd all-time and was the Sharks iron man with 53 games played in a row before he was traded to New Jersey on Feb 8th. The late Tom Cavanagh holds the Sharks record with 216gp.

 

*Shootout Hero… Dan DaSilva continues to lead the Sharks in the shootout this season. DD is 4-for-8 in the shootout with two game winners.

 

*13 and counting… The Sharks have been in a team record 13 shootouts already this season. Worcester has a 5-8 record in the shootout. Worcester ranks 19^th in shootouts for with a 26.9% (18-for-67) scoring proficiency and 26^th in shootout goals allowed at 36.9% (24-for-65).

 

*Sharks feast on Falcons… Worcester have a point in 16-in-17 games against the Springfield Falcons (13-1-3) and 21-3-3 in the last 27 games vs. the Falcons with the only regulation loss coming in a 4-2 decision on Feb 23^rd at the DCU Center. Alex Stalock is 11-0-1 in 12 appearances against the Falcons.

 

*Braun in NHL… Justin Braun made his NHL debut in Vancouver on Nov 26… Justin played 16:56 in the loss to the Canucks… Braun recorded two assists in his 2^nd NHL game in a 4-3W in Edmonton on Nov 24 and was the #3 star with a +2 rating in 22:48 of action…. Braun has played in 16 games with San Jose (1-8-9) this season. His first NHL goal came in a 4-0 win in Ottawa against Pascal LeClaire on December 2. Justin Braun represented the Sharks at the 2011 AHL All-Star Classic in Hershey and fired a 95.6mph shot in the hardest shot competition. Justin is currently on recall to San Jose.

 

*Sullivan Scores… Sharks defenseman Sean Sullivan already has 11 goals (2 GWG) this season from the Sharks blue line, good for 2nd in the AHL.   The 26-year-old from Boston, MA had 12 goals and 49 points in San Antonio last season. Sean ranks 4th on the Sharks with 28 points this season. Sullivan was featured on Sports Center as the #4 play of the top ten countdown for his hip check on Jason Pitton on Jan 22 (BRI): Watch HERE.

 

*Defense Scoring… Sharks defensemen have scored 34 of the Sharks 160 goals this season, good for 21.2% of the Sharks goals scored this season. Sean Sullivan has 11, Matt Irwin 9.

 

*Irwin scoring… Sharks rookie defenseman Matt Irwin has 9 goals and 15 assists from the Sharks blue line this season.  The rookie from UMASS-Amherst received his first NHL recall on Feb 18^th but did not dress for San Jose.

 

*Give me Moore… #8 has played 174 games in a Worcester Sharks jersey and has compiled 46 points (10-37-47) and 258 penalty minutes. His +34 is 4^th best in Sharks history. He recorded his first professional two goal game on November 14 vs. Norfolk and was the #1 star. Moore scored his first NHL goal in his 2^nd NHL game in a 4-3OTL in Colorado on November 17^th. Mike scored at 9:14 of the 2^nd period on a slap shot assisted by Dany Heatley on Peter Budaj to give the Sharks a 3-1 lead. He has also been the Sharks Man of the Year for the previous two seasons for his continued work in the Worcester community. Moore was named the 4^th captain in Sharks history on Feb 11^th before the Sharks defeated the Falcons 5-0 in Albany.

 

*Who’s your BF?... Sharks 2^nd year forward Benn Ferriero  started his sophomore campaign on FIRE with NINE goals through 10 games to lead the Worcester Sharks offensively. Benn has played 29 games with the San Jose Sharks and has five goals, four assists and +7.   

 

*Sheriff back in town… Frazer McLaren returned to Worcester on Nov 20 after beginning the season with the San Jose Sharks. Frazer has played in 150 games in a Worcester Sharks sweater accumulating 26 points (12-15-27) and 381 penalty minutes. McLaren ranks 2nd all time in penalty minutes by a Worcester Sharks player (Brennan Evans 381, and Brad Staubitz 462). The Sherriff missed 21 games due to a lower body injury before returning to the lineup on January 11 vs. Albany.

 

*Sharks in the Atlantic… the Sharks have a 23-13-3-6 record against Atlantic Division prey this season.

 

*Good when leading… the Sharks have a 15-3-0-1 when leading after the 1st period of play and a 21-1-0-1 when leading after the 2^nd period of play this season.

 

*Close encounters… the Sharks won for the first time at home by three goals or more in a 5-2 victory over the Monarchs on Feb 27.   At home, the Sharks are 10-2-1-4 in one goal games, 4-5-0-0 in two goal games, and 1-2-0-0 in three goal games.

 

 

*Outshot but not outscored…. Worcester is 9-5-0-2 when they get outshot during a game.

 

*Reunion of sorts…Jonathan Cheechoo returns to the Sharks organization in Worcester and will once again play for head coach Roy Sommer…. Coach Sommer coached Cheechoo in Kentucky and Cleveland in the AHL before his NHL days. Before this season, Cheechoo had 56-63-119pts in 137 games under Coach Sommer. “Cheech” ranks 1st in Worcester with 47 points (18-29-47) in 55 games this season.

 

*Familiar Faces…21 players returned to the 2010-11 roster from the regular season Atlantic Division championship team including four 20 goal scorers (DaSilva, Mashinter, Trevelyan, and Zalewski) and team MVP Alex Stalock. 

 

*56… The Sharks allowed a franchise record 56 shots on goal in Norfolk on Saturday, October 16^th in a 7-2 loss to the Admirals… the previous high for most shots allowed in a game was on April 6, 2007 when the Sharks allowed 52 shots in a 4-1 win over the Wolf Pack at the DCU Center.

 

*24… The Sharks tied a franchise record with 24 shots in the first period vs. the Sound Tigers on January 28. Worcester fired a season high 48 shots in the 3-2 victory.

 

*47… Carter Hutton made 47 saves in his Sharks debut on Saturday, October 16^th in Norfolk.

 

*Nice Start… Carter Hutton made his first start of the season on Sunday, October 31^st in Providence and made 37 saves to pick up the victory in a 6-1 win over the Bruins.

 

*Great Start… goaltender Daren Machesney became the first player in franchise history to post a shutout in his first start for Worcester. Machesney made 25 saves in a 5-0 win at Springfield on February 11.

 

*First AHL Win… Sharks goaltender Jeff Jakaitis made 29 saves and went 4-for-6 in the shootout in his 3^rd career AHL start in a 4-3 shootout victory in Providence on Feb 20. The 27-year-old native of Rochester NY had a 18-16-3 record with the Dayton Gems in the CHL before he signed a PTO with Worcester on Feb 15. He played college hockey at Lake Superior State Univ. Jeff was released on Feb 24.

 

*6 and counting… The Sharks have used a franchise record six different goaltenders this season. (Stalock 41gp, Hutton 12gp, Gill 1gp, Machesney 4gp, Jakaitis 3gp, and Sexsmith 2)

 

*43 and counting… the Sharks have set a franchise record with 43 players on their roster this season.

 

*San Jose to Worcester… Sharks rookie netminder Carter Hutton picked up his first professional shutout vs. the Bruins on February 5. (20 saves). Earlier in the day in Boston, he served as the backup goaltender for the San Jose Sharks in their 2-0 victory in Boston.

 

*Déjà vu… the Sharks franchise picked up identical 2-0 victories over the Bruins franchise on February 5^th. In the afternoon, San Jose shutout Boston 2-0 behind a goal by Logan Couture, an empty netter by Devin Setoguchi, and 26 saves by Antti Niemi. At night, Worcester defeated Providence 2-0 in Worcester behind a goal by Joe Loprieno, an empty netter by Brandon Mashinter, and 20 saves by Carter Hutton.

 

*Young Guns… the Sharks have dressed 16 rookies, including three from UMASS-Amherst (Braun, Irwin, and Marcou) and two from UMASS-Lowell (Hutton and Schaus).

 

*Vets… Two veterans will provide leadership for the Sharks squad this season, which include: former Maurice Richard winner Jonathan Cheechoo and the leading goal scorer for the Sharks from last season, T.J. Trevelyan.

 

*Super Sunday… the Sharks are 10-3-0-2 on Sunday afternoon games this season… including a 7-1-0-2 record at the DCU Center.

 

*Home/Away goals… the Sharks have scored 79 goals at home (29 games) and allowed 81 at the DCU Center…. while scoring 82 goals (30 games) on the road and allowing 95 goals on the road.

 

*Good Starts… Worcester has outscored their opponents 50-39 (+11) in the first period, 55-53 (+2) in the 2^nd period, but outscored 49-73 (-24) in the third period.

*Back-to-back Shutouts… the Sharks posted back-to-back shutouts in franchise history with a 2-0 blanking of the Bruins on Feb 5^th (Hutton 20 saves) and a 5-0 whitewash of the Falcons in Springfield on Feb 11^th (Machesney 25 saves).

 

*Shutout streak…. The Sharks had a shutout streak of 152:22 with P.J. Fenton scoring at 15:20 of the 1^st period for Rochester on Feb 16 and the Monarchs Jon Zeiler scoring the last goal against the Sharks at 7:58 of the 3^rd period past Alex Stalock in the Sharks 4-3SOW over Manchester on Feb 4.

 

*Streakers… Justin Braun (1-5-6) has a five game point streak… Jamie McGinn (3-0-3) and T.J. Trevelyan (1-1-2) each have a two game point streak.  The Sharks have a point in 3 straight games (1-0-0-2).

 

*Stole it from Bill Ballou… The Sharks are 11-7-0-0 when there two referees calling penalties… Worcester did not have a single power play in their 4-3W over Springfield on Nov 21 – it marked the first time in 337 regular season games the Sharks did not have a power play chance….then on Feb 23 the Sharks were again held without a power play against the Falcons in a 4-2 loss. The game saw only 1 minor penalty. (Loprieno for holding at 14:59 of 2^nd period)

 

*Through the years… the Sharks finished 2010 with a 45-25-10 record…. Followed by a 45-31-4 record in 2009, a 35-41-7 record in 2008, and a 41-27-10 record in 2007.

 

*I like Bridgeport… Sharks forward Cory Quirk has scored twice this season with both tallies coming in Bridgeport. “Quirky” has ten goals in a Sharks sweater with 6 of them coming against the Sound Tigers.

 

*Score in Game #1… David Marshall became the 9^th Sharks player to score in his Sharks debut on December 18 at Bridgeport. (Cheechoo, Darche, Spang, Pavelski, Raduns, Larose, Lucia, MacIntyre)

 

*Crazed Rat grabs 30… with his game winning goal on Nov 21^st vs. the Falcons, Andrew Desjardins became the 9^th player in franchise history to score 30 goals. Desjardins skated in his 200^th game as a Shark on February 5 vs. the Bruins and picked up a fighting major.

 

*Plus Players… Andrew Desjardins ranks 1st in franchise history with a +47 rating while line mate and fellow Crazed Rat Dan DaSilva is +46.

 

 *Massachusetts… The Sharks have FOUR players born and raised in Massachusetts (Sean Sullivan – Boston, Cory Quirk – Brockton, Benn Ferriero – Essex, John McCarthy - Andover) In all; the Sharks have 14 American born players and 13 Canadians.

 

*NHL Experience… the Sharks dressed 12 players with NHL experience on Jan 28-29 in back-to-back victories at home over the Sound Tigers and the Bruins on Feb 4-5^th.

 

*Original Crazed Rat back… forward John McCarthy returned to Worcester on January 28 after beginning the season in San Jose. One of the original crazed rats, McCarthy has played in 33 games with San Jose this season (2-2-4)… John is currently on recall with San Jose.

 

*Packing them in… the Sharks drew 33,593 fans during the six game home stand which concluded on February 5 at the DCU Center (average of 5,599). The Sharks 7,273 attendance on Jan 29 pushed them over the 750,000 mark in four + seasons in Worcester.

 

*All 5 years… Jamie McGinn became the first player in Worcester Sharks history to dress in at least one game in the first five seasons with the Worcester Sharks when he played on January 28 vs. the Sound Tigers. The 22-year-old forward from Fergus, Ontario has played in 99 games for Worcester (34-32-66) and 75 penalty minutes.

 

*Jamie loves the Bruins…. 10 of the 34 AHL goals scored by Jamie McGinn has come against the Bruins… and all four of his AHL playoff goals have come against Providence.

 

*Breaking down the scoring… The Sharks have scored 161 goals this season… 45 on the power play, 102 even strength goals, 4 shorthanded tallies, 5 shootout goals, and 3 empty net goals.

 

*Goals for Petrecki… 2^nd year defenseman Nick Petrecki has 9 points (3-6-9) and 90 penalty minutes in 46 games for the Sharks this season…. Nick has 9 fighting majors to lead the Sharks….The 21-year-old from Schenectady, NY had 14 points last season (2-12-14) with the Sharks…. He received his first NHL recall of Feb 17 and did not play in any games for San Jose.

 

*Loprieno the forward… D-Man Joe Loprieno has played forward in nine games for the Sharks this season and scored his first pro goal in the first period vs. Charlotte on Nov 27.

 

*Special Teams… Worcester ranks 25^th in the AHL on the PK at 79.2% (46-for-221) and 14th in the AHL on the power play with a 18.1% conversion rating (45-for-48). The Sharks have scored 4 shorthanded goals and have allowed 10 shorthanded tallies.

 

*4 shorties… the Sharks have scored 4 shorthanded goals this season, all of them coming at home. Worcester is 4-0-0-0 in those games. Jamie McGinn has 2 while Andrew Desjardins and Kevin Henderson have the others.

 

*16-0… Worcester outshot the Sound Tigers 16-0 in the 2^nd period on December 12 at the DCU Center… it was the first time all season an AHL team did not fire a shot in a period.

 

*Henderson surpasses… Sharks 2^nd year forward Kevin Henderson has 5 goals and 8 assists this season and is +10 through 52 games this season. The 24-year-old from Toronto, ONT had 15 points (2-13-15) in 64 games last season. 

 

*Good Sharks!... The Sharks rank 24^th in the AHL with just 15.75 penalty minutes per game.

 

*Bad Sharks!... The Sharks and Whale combined for 138 penalty minutes (WOR 47, CT 91) on December 4 at CT, with 124 penalty minutes in the 2^nd period alone (10 majors,7 minors, 2 misconducts, and 4 game misconducts).

*Stalock the stopper… Alex Stalock grabbed his 50^th professional win vs. Portland on December 5….He has allowed just 64 goals in his last 29 games (2.20 goals against per game) after allowing 25 goals in his first 7 games…. Alex ranks 1st in the AHL with 2397 minutes played and 2nd in saves with 1025. Stalock is a perfect 4-for-4 stopping penalty shots, including two this season (the Bruins Roussel on Oct 23 and the Monarchs Elkins on Dec 19). Stalock left the game injured on February 4^th vs. Manchester and is out for the rest of the season after season ending surgery on Feb 14.

 

*Al in the NHL… Alex Stalock made his NHL debut in San Jose on Tuesday, Feb 1. Stalock came in relief of Niemi down 3-0 midway through the 2^nd period vs. Phoenix.   Stalock made 9 saves and got the victory in a wild come from behind 5-3 win over the Coyotes.

 

*Alex Stalock hits 100 games…. Stalock became just the 2^nd Sharks goaltender to dress in 100 games on January 28  joining Thomas Greiss… Alex is 57-36-6 for the Sharks in those 100 games.

 

*Mr. Dependable…. Andrew Desjardins had dressed in 188 straight games for Worcester breaking the record held by Derek Joslin (114 games)…. Desjardins had the 2^nd longest streak in the AHL (Nick Dodge in Charlotte) before his first NHL recall on January 2, 2011.

 

*Monster Mash… Sharks power forward Brandon Mashinter received his first NHL recall on December 29, 2010. Mash made his NHL debut on December 29^th in Minnesota (13 shifts and 7:17 of ice) in the Sharks 5-3 loss. Brandon has played 10 games in San Jose this season with no points and two fighting majors during his first NHL recall. Mash received his 2^nd recall on Feb 28^th and is currently in San Jose.

Logan Couture (25-19-44) has ripped it up in his first full season in San Jose. Logan is 1st on the team with 25 goals and 8 game winning goals. Former Worcester Sharks; Joe Pavelski, Devin Setoguchi, Torrey Mitchell, and John McCarthy have all scored goals for San Jose.   Justin Braun had 9 points (1-8-9) in 15 games and Benn Ferriero had 9 points (5-4-9) in 32 games played and +8. Brandon Mashinter is scoreless in ten games with two fights.

On Tuesday, the Sharks travel to Portland for a 6:30pm tilt with the Pirates in the battle for the Unum Cup.
