Sharks Route Ducks 5-0 in Game 2

Game 2 of the Sharks-Ducks rookie tournament turned quickly in the Sharks favor with two first period goals as San Jose routed their Southern California rivals 5-0.
There were multiple stars for San Jose’s youngsters. Dean Strong put himself on the scoreboard for a second straight night by scoring the opening tally. First rounder Nick Petrecki posted an impressive Gordie Howe hat trick with a goal, assist and a fight. Kevin Henderson finished the night with two tallies. And one of them would not have been awarded one of the game’s three stars if it was a regular season affair. Netminder Alex Stalock turned away 25 shots in earning the victory. It was not as if Stalock had an easy night between the pipes as there were a few odd man rushes, including a three-on-one. “Our D-man played that right and turned it into a two-on-one,” said Stalock. The coaches and teammates came away impressed with the University of Minnesota-Duluth product. “He made some big, timely saves,” said Roy Sommer, who is coaching the group for all three games. “He deserved the shutout. He was really calm back there and moved the puck well.” “He played really well in net,” said Henderson. “He steered away the loose pucks and make the big saves.” Stalock appreciated the fact that his teammates gave their netminder the early advantage for a second straight night. “We jumped out and got the lead and then added the second right away,” said Stalock. “We kept going until the final buzzer. We kept a lot of the shots to the outside and the penalty killers played great.” It may not be a regular season game, but a shutout is still a shutout to the men who wear the masks. “It’s always nice,” said Stalock. PETRECKI Petrecki hadn’t played in a meaningful contest for quite some time, so he was glad to get the first game out of the way. “I had some nerves,” said Petrecki. “Playing is a lot better than practicing every day. The compete level is a lot higher. With us (Boston College) not making the NCAA’s, it was a long summer.” The nerves weren’t evident at all in Petrecki’s performance. “Petrecki was a moose out there,” said Sommer. “He laid out some big body hits. He skated with the puck and scored a nice goal.” HENDERSON Offensively Henderson wished he could have added an assist to join Petrecki in the Gordie Howe hat trick club. “I wish the fight would have gone a little better,” joked Henderson. “I was fortunate to get a couple of goals. It would have been nice (to get the Gordie Howe hat trick), but there is still tomorrow.” FIGHTS There were four fights on the night and three former college players participated for San Jose. John McCarthy, Kevin Henderson, Nick Petrecki, Rigby Burgart all dropped the gloves for the Sharks. “The college guys are caged up for four years,” said Petrecki about fighting not being allowed at the university level. FINAL TALLY C.J. Stretch scored San Jose’s final tally on the night. SRO It was another standing room only crowd for the event at Sharks Ice, with proceeds benefiting the Jr. Sharks.
