Fire Burns Bright to Win Second Straight “Guns N Hoses” Contest
WORCESTER, MA – Prior to the Worcester Sharks taking the ice on Saturday night, the Worcester Fire Department continued their on-ice dominance by skating to a 4-2 victory over the Worcester Police Department in the second annual “Guns N Hoses” charity game at the DCU Center.
The Hoses got on the board first when Pat Moran beat Police netminder Tim Pageau from close range, flicking a pass from Eric Otterson into the upper right corner of the net at 6:45 of the first period. The Reds upped their lead to 2-0 at 9:28 on the power play. Mark LaPlante tallied the goal while Keith Lempicki and Rich Nicholson picked up the assists.
The Blues cut into the lead at 15:39 when Mike Gervais threw the puck on goal from a bad angle, finding the back of the net to make it a 2-1 contest. Less than two minutes later, Fire regained its two goal lead when Tom McLaughin found the puck on his stick after a deflected shot. He easily found the vacated net, with assists credited to Nicholson and Moran.
Just before the intermission, the Police made it 3-2 when Joe Scampini converted a breakaway, beating Fire goaltender Kevin Miller five-hole. Fran Bartley and Gervais were credited with the assists.
A late penalty call foiled the Police’s push for an equalizer, and on the ensuing power play, the Reds netted an insurance tally to cap the scoring. Moran led a 2-on-1 breakaway and found linemate Tom Fitman, who one-timed the puck past Gervais with just over 3 minutes remaining to produce the 4-2 final score.
Continuing with the tradition begun following last year’s game, the Worcester Sharks plan to donate partial ticket sale proceeds from the event to a charitable cause jointly selected by the Police and Fire Departments.
