Sharks host Monarchs tonight at 7:30pm

Sharks Begin Three Game Home Stand on Friday
By: Andrew Nawn

The Worcester Sharks (23-20-1-5, 52 points) begin a three game home stand after finishing up their season long five game road trip in which they went (3-2-0-0) and chomped out a possible six out of ten points. The Sharks currently sit in third place in the Atlantic Division and ninth place in the Eastern Conference. Worcester will look to get back to their winning ways at home and snap a six game home losing streak when they take on Atlantic Division rival Manchester Monarchs on Friday at 7:30 p.m. to start the home stand.

Following Friday’s game the Sharks will look to snap a personal five game losing streak verse the Portland Pirates on Saturday at 7 p.m., as well as gain ground on Portland, who sit ten points ahead of Worcester in the Atlantic Division. Wrapping up the busy home stand the Sharks will host the Springfield Falcons at 3 p.m. on Sunday. Worcester will look to use some good “home cooking” and get back into the top eight playoff spots as they enter this weekend trailing the eighth spot by just three points.

A Look at Manchester…
The Manchester Monarchs (22-24-2-3, 49 points) currently are fourth in the Atlantic Division and tied for twelfth in the Eastern Conference. On the season the Monarchs are (15-12-2-2) verse Atlantic Division opponents and (3-3-1-1) verse the Sharks. In Manchester’s last ten games they hold a record of (2-7-0-1).

Monarchs to watch…
The Monarchs offense has been paced by two rookies, Tyler Toffoli and Tanner Pearson; both are enjoying great rookie campaigns. Toffoli’s team high 24 goals are the second highest total among all AHL skaters and highest amongst all AHL rookies. On the season Toffoli has posted 24 goals and 16 assists for 40 points in 48 games, his 40 points are also the second highest among rookies. Tanner Pearson, who is also enjoying a solid first season, has registered 12 goals and 20 assists for 32 points in 50 games. Another Monarch to keep an eye on is Linden Vey the team’s leading scorer; Vey has tallied 13 goals and 30 assists for 43 points in 51 games.

A Look at Portland….
The Portland Pirates (30-18-1-1, 62 points) are in second place in the Atlantic Division, trailing Providence by one point and fifth place in the Eastern Conference. The Pirates have been a constant offensive force as they lead the Atlantic Division in goals scored with 147 goals, but have needed every single one of their goals, as they also lead the Division in goals allowed with 143 goals. They have twice scored seven goals against Worcester this season, which is the most that Worcester has given up in a single game this season. In their last ten games Portland has a record of (6-4-0-0).

Pirates to watch for…
With Portland’s captain, Alexandre Bolduc returned from his call up to the Phoenix Coyotes, he is one of the players to watch as he has posted 36 points (19 goals and 17 assists) in 39 games with Portland. Chris Conner, another dynamic player for Portland seems to save his best for Worcester as he has tallied 10 points (4 goals and 6 assists) out of his 24 points (8 goals and 16 assists) in nine contests this season. Rob Klinkhammer seems to be another Pirate that saves his best for Worcester as he has collected 7 points (3 goals and 4 assists) out of his 40 points (13 goals and 27 assists) in nine games verse the Sharks.

A Look at Springfield…
The Springfield Falcons (29-12-4-3, 65 points) sit atop the North East Division and only trail the Syracuse Crunch by three points for the top spot in the Eastern Conference. The Falcons success can be contributed to the team having a dynamic offense, scoring 3.31 goals a game (3rd in AHL) and a stingy defense, allowing 2.44 goals a game (4th in AHL). In their last ten games Springfield’s record is (6-3-1-0).

Falcons to watch…
Springfield goalie, Curtis McElhinney has been stellar between the pipes this season resulting in him being a top most goalie categories in the AHL. Here are how his numbers rank among the league leaders, 20 wins (2nd in AHL), 7 shutouts (1st in AHL), 2.30 goals against (6th in AHL), and .926 save percentage (tied for 4th in AHL).  Another Falcon who is having a standout year is Jonathan Audy-Marchessault who is the team leading scorer and the second leading scorer in all the AHL. Marchessault has registered 16 goals and 30 assists for 46 points in 47 games, but has only recorded one assist in three games verse Worcester this season.
