Breaking Down the 2012-13 Worcester Sharks
Happy offseason Worcester Sharks fans! Eric Lindquist checking in from my cubicle at the DCU Center! With training camp less than a month away, I have had several people ask over the last few weeks if the Sharks are going to be good this season. The answer is YES! If you don’t believe me, I have broken down the possible Sharks roster for the 2012-13 season. I have added EVERYONE that is eligible to play in the AHL this season for the Sharks (AHL contracts, 2-Way NHL contracts). So here we go!
Returning forwards: (8)
Jimmy Bonneau – 8th year pro, 6-3 220lbs, assistant captain led Sharks with 22 fighting majors last year.
Curt Gogol – 2nd year pro, 6-0 185lbs, led AHL with 19 rookie fighting majors and 167 penalty minutes.
James Livingston – 2nd year pro, 6-1 210lbs, 20 points (6-14-20) last year.
Brandon Mashinter – 4th year pro, 6-3 220lbs, 9th all-time in Worcester Sharks history with 103 pts and 8th with 280 penalty minutes. 13 career games with San Jose.
John McCarthy – 4th year pro, 6-1 200lbs, 10th all-time in Worcester Sharks history with 101 pts and 2nd with a +42 rating, set personal high with 20 goals last year. 51 career games with San Jose.
Frazer McLaren – 5th year pro, 6-5 250lbs, Worcester Sharks all-time leader in penalty minutes (490) and fighting majors (47). 39 career games in NHL with San Jose.
Brodie Reid – 2nd year pro, 6-1 195lbs, 25 points (10-15-25) last year.
Marek Viedensky – 2nd year pro, 6-4 210lbs, 11 points (5-6-11) last year
New Forwards: (2)
Bracken Kearns – 8th year pro, 6-0 190lbs, assistant captain and 22 goals last year in San Antonio with 5 games with Florida (NHL). 40 career fights in AHL.
Jon Matsumoto – 6th year pro, 6-0 190lbs, scored 20 + goals in AHL in 5 straight seasons, had a 30 goal season in 2009-10, 14 games in NHL with Carolina and Florida.
Rookie Forwards: (5)
Yanni Gourde – 5-9 170lbs, QMJHL MVP, 124 points (37-87-124) last year in 68 games with Victoriaville, not afraid to get nose dirty, impressed in Worcester end of last season with 3 points in 4 games.
Freddie Hamilton – 6-1 190lbs, 86 points (35-51-86) in 61 games with Niagra in OHL. Drafted by SJ in 5th round in 2010, Younger brother of Dougie Hamilton (Boston Bruins).
Travis Oleksuk – 6-0 200lbs, 21 goals last season at U. Minn-Duluth, won National Championship, play maker, scores big goals.
Sebastian Stalberg – 6-0 180lbs, five points in 13 games with Worcester after forgoing senior year at Vermont. Younger brother of Viktor Stalberg (CHI). Great skater and terrific shot.
Daniil Tarasov – 6-0 175lbs, Russian born, led the USHL with 47 goals in Indiana last year, first Russian born player in Worcester.
Returning defensemen: (4)
Sena Acolatse – 2nd year pro, 5-11 205lbs, Worcester Sharks rookie of the year with 21 points (8-13-21) and 7 fighting majors last season.
Taylor Doherty – 2nd year pro, 6-7 230lbs, 6 points (0-6-6) and 4 fighting majors last season.
Matt Irwin – 3rd year pro, 6-2 210lbs, 42 points (11-31-42) and AHL All-Star last season, led AHL with 209 shots on goal and nine power play goals.
Matt Pelech – 6th year pro, 6-5, 220lbs, 8 points (1-7-8) and 168 penalty minutes last season, added 16 fighting majors, devastating hitter and shot blocking machine.
New defensemen: (1)
Danny Groulx – 11th year pro, 6-0 200lbs, returns to Worcester after spending last two seasons in KHL. Named the AHL’s best d-man in his only season in Worcester with 66 points (14-52-66) in 80 games in 2009-10.
Rookie defensemen: (1)
Matt Tennyson – 6-2 210lbs, turned pro after three impressive seasons at Western Michigan, had 2 points (1-1-2) in 7 games late last year with Worcester, Former San Jose Jr. Shark.
Returning Goaltenders: (3)
Thomas Heemskerk – 2nd year pro, 6-0 195lbs, spent the majority of last season in Stockton (13-12-0) before appearing in four games with the Sharks (0-1-0). Still considered AHL rookie.
Harri Sateri – 2nd year pro, 6-1 210lbs, finished with a 15-20-1 record and a .908% with Worcester last season with two shutouts.
Alex Stalock – 4th year pro, 6-0 185lbs, played in 11 games with three teams last season (Stockton, Worcester, Peoria) in an injury shortened season. 2nd all-time in Worcester history with 59 wins and former AHL All-Star and All-Rookie.
Rookie Goaltenders: (1)
Taylor Nelson – 6-1 177lbs, went 21-7-3 with a .924% and led Ferris State to the National Championship game last season.
So, what do you think of the Sharks roster heading into the 2012-13 season? Looking pretty good! Also, you might notice that Nick Petrecki and Tim Kennedy are not on the above list since they have yet to sign their contracts for the upcoming season. (it does not mean that they will not). Will keep you posted on those two as we get closer to training camp.
Also, I should remind you that each season, a training camp invite or two earned a spot on the Sharks roster to begin the season… we will have to wait and see come October! BTW… training camp roster is being compiled right now… more information to follow on SharksAHL.com.
