WORCESTER – The Lowell Devils beat the Worcester Sharks by a score of 2-1 on Saturday night at the DCU Center. The Sharks did take one point, however, after Justin Kurtz tied it up with five minutes left to play in the game to force overtime.
In the first period, both Worcester and Lowell battled hard but couldn’t muster a goal past each others netminders. The Devils outshot the Sharks 10-8.
Just moments after Worcester had a goal called off because the puck deflected off the official and into the net, Lowell forward Grant Marshall got his team on the board with a break away goal at 14:06 of the second period. After getting around Sharks defenseman Scott Ferguson, Marshall faked right and went left into the open net past a sprawled out Schaefer.
The Sharks battled hard all third period and finally with five minutes to go Justin Kurtz tied the game with a shot from the point that clang off the post and into the net. Lukas Kaspar and Ferguson assisted on the goal.
The score stood at 1-1 through the rest of the period and overtime, forcing the game to be decided by a shootout.
Forward Stephen Gionta won the game for the Devils in the shootout on the fifth attempt, not even giving Worcester a chance to get it back.
Frank Doyle earned the win for Lowell with 34 saves while Schaefer was credited with the loss after 27 saves in net.
The Sharks return home on Tuesday, December 26 playing hosting to the Hartford Wolf Pack at 7:00 p.m. Its Family Fun Pack Night where fans can get four tickets, four sodas, four hotdogs or popcorn for $52.
