Alex Stalock makes 15 saves in 2-1 victory in Springfield
SPRINGFIELD, MA – Making his first AHL start in 379 days, goaltender Alex Stalock made 15 saves and stopped Alexandre Giroux on a third period penalty shot attempt as the Sharks broke a two game skid with a 2-1 victory over the Springfield Falcons at the Mass Mutual Center on Sunday afternoon.
Andrew Murray and Nick Petrecki scored first period goals for the Sharks as Worcester pulled five points ahead of the Falcons for the 8th spot in the Eastern Conference. Game four of the four game road trip (1-2-0-0) concludes on Tuesday night with a 7pm start vs. the Syracuse Crunch.
The Sharks came out buzzing in the first period and charged out to a 2-0 lead. Andrew Murray (2nd) sent a blast from on top of the left circle on a rush through the pads of Manny Legace at 7:56 to give Worcester a 1-0 lead. Nick Petrecki (1st) put the Sharks ahead 2-0, with a wicked wrist shot from the left point that deflected off a Falcons defenseman and past Legace at 17:46. Alex Stalock made four saves in net as the Sharks led 2-0 and outshot the Falcons 12-4 through 20 minutes.
The Falcons had four consecutive power plays to start off the second period and finally broke through with a 5-on-3 tally by Dane Byers (13th) at 9:35. Byers fired a blocked shot past Stalock to get the Falcons on the board. Springfield outshot Worcester 10-6 in the middle frame with the Sharks holding a 2-1 lead through 40 minutes.
The Falcons only fired two shots on goal in the third period but Alexandre Giroux was rewarded a penalty shot at 6:01 and was denied by Alex Stalock. The Sharks played superb defensive hockey in the final frame to hold on for the 2-1 victory. A near line brawl broke out after the final whistle as Matt Pelech (10th FM) took on Dan Byers (6th FM) at the 20:00 mark.
Worcester’s record improves to 24-17-4-5 (57pts in 50gp) and 12-8-4-3 away from the DCU Center.
