Wolf Pack Bite Sharks in Overtime

Worcester, Mass. – The Worcester Sharks lost in overtime to the Hartford Wolf Pack by a score of 6-5 on Sunday evening at the DCU Center. The Sharks led on three occasions, but could not overcome the relentless efforts of the Wolf Pack team. Hartford’s Jarkko Immonen scored the game winner just 1:43 into the overtime session to take home the victory.
The Sharks drew first blood midway through the first period when Lukas Kaspar put a beautiful pass on Tom Cavanagh’s stick to shovel it past Wolf Pack netminder Al Montoya’s left leg.
Hartford pulled even at 1-1 just 1:20 later when Jarkko Immonen scored an easy goal from in front of Patzold. Ryan Callahan clanged the post and Immonen was able to get to the rebound first for his fifth of the season.
Worcester didn’t waste any time taking back their lead. Less than a minute later, Sharks forward Graham Mink ripped a shot of his own off the cross bar and linemate Craig Valette was there to slap home his sixth of the year for the 2-1 Sharks lead.
The Wolf Pack scored while on a 5-on-3 power play at 3:36 of the second period. Ivan Baranka passed the puck down low to Ryan Callahan who was stationed on the far post, Callahan roofed his shot over a sprawled Patzold to tie the game at two apiece.
Worcester went up 3-2 at 17:17 of the second period. While skating four a side, Josh Prudden sent the puck down low to Valette, who back-handed it home while streaking across the top of the crease.
The Sharks lead didn’t last long, as Hartford defenseman and Millbury, Mass native Marvin Degon scored his third goal of the season with a two-man advantage. The shot from the point hit the post and found its way past Patzold at 17:54 of the middle stanza.
Hartford took the lead for the first time of the night when Bryce Lampman beat Patzold high over the glove hand just 3:25 into the final frame. Callahan found Lampman flying through the slot for his second goal of the year.
Worcester’s Michal Macho tallied his first goal of his professional career to even the game at four apiece. Macho carried the puck into the zone and circled behind the net before spinning around and releasing the puck to beat Montoya on the near side at 7:28 of the third period.
The Wolf Pack regained the lead at 10:30 of the third stanza. Lampman’s shot from the point deflected off bodies in front of the net and trickled past Patzold for his second of the night.
Garrett Stafford’s blast from the blue line tied the game at five a side with only 3:51 left in regulation to force overtime. Prudden and Mink assisted on the goal earning their third and fourth assists of the right, respectively.
In overtime, Sharks defenseman Mathieu Biron was whistled off for hooking and Hartford was able to capitalize. Jarkko Immonen scored on quick snapper to beat Patzold on the short side for the win and extra point in the standings.
Wolf Pack goaltender Montoya earned the victory with 27 saves. Patzold made 16 saves in the loss. Hartford went 3-for-8 on the power play while Worcester was 1-for-5.
The Sharks are on the road for three games next weekend facing the Norfolk Admirals on Friday and Saturday at 7:15 PM both nights and the Hershey Bears on Sunday at 5:00 PM.
