Sharks Gutsy Performance Leads to Win at Manchester, 2-1

MANCHESTER, NH – Thomas Greiss made 32-saves leading the Sharks to an impressive 2-1 win on the road against the Manchester Monarchs on Saturday night. Graham Mink and Mike Iggulden provided the offense for Worcester as the team kept pace in the Atlantic Division standings with a tie for fourth place.

For the first time in ten games, the Sharks held a lead after twenty minutes of play. Graham Mink’s 15th goal of the year, on a bullet wrist shot over the glove hand side of the AHL’s top netminder Jason Labarbera, was the only tally of the opening period. Tom Cavanagh and Scott Ferguson assisted on the goal, which came at the 3:57 mark of the period. Thomas Greiss made his 22nd appearance of the year in goal for Worcester with a 10-save effort in the opening frame.

After trading goals in the second period, the Sharks held on to a one-goal lead with a 2-1 advantage. Mike Iggulden scored his 21st goal of the season banking a puck off a Manchester defenseman’s skate in behind a surprised Labarbera. Mathieu Darche and Lukas Kaspar assisted on the goal for a 2-0 lead. The Monarchs responded late in the period as T.J. Kemp scored with only 59-seconds remaining. The power play goal for Manchester was Kemp’s fourth of the year and assisted by Lauri Tukonen and Matt Moulson. Worcester out-shot Manchester 10-8 during the period.

Protecting a one-goal lead, the Sharks relied on their goaltender, who responded with highlight save after highlight save. Thomas Greiss, after 15 saves in the third period, finished the night with 32-saves and his 12th win of the year. The win for Worcester snapped a three-game losing streak and also halted the Monarchs home ice success streak at eight games.

The Sharks host the AHL’s top team, the Norfolk Admirals, in a rare 7:00 pm Sunday evening affair at the DCU Center tomorrow night. The Sharks split a pair of matchups in Norfolk earlier this season, snapping the Admirals’ 16-game point streak on home ice in the process.
