Sharks Final Contest of Road Trip is a Devil of a Night

altLOWELL, MA – Even a return to the Sharks lineup from leading scorer Mathieu Darche and defensively detailed Tomas Plihal couldn’t lift the team past a hot goaltender. Lowell’s Scott Clemmensen, with a 35-save performance, denied the Sharks a win in their final contest of an eight game road trip. Aaron Voros scored two goals, including the game-winner for the Devils.

Out-shooting the Devils 14-4 in the first period was not enough for the Sharks, who trailed 1-0 after twenty minutes of play. Aaron Voros scored the period’s only goal gathering his own rebound to beat Thomas Greiss between the legs at the 14:23 mark. Niklas Bergfors and Patrick Davis assisted on the tally for Lowell. Davis had earlier given the Sharks their best chance at scoring the night’s opening tally as he was whistled on five minute major penalty for highs sticking just three minutes into action. Scott Clemmensen, assigned earlier in the day by New Jersey on a conditioning assignment, saved six shots from Worcester on the power play and finished the period with 14 stops.

A near carbon-copy performance of the opening frame had the Sharks trailing 2-0 through forty minutes. Clemmensen was sensational again with 13-saves nullifying the Sharks on several point blank scoring opportunities. Voros then scored on another rebound for his second of the game and 8th goal of the year. Mike Mottau earned the lone assist on the goal with the initial shot. The Sharks were out-shooting Lowell 27-15 after forty minutes.

Not much changed as the night continued. Ryan Murphy scored a late empty net goal to secure a 3-0 victory for Lowell. Clemmensen finished the evening with a 35-save effort as the Sharks were shutout for the fifth time this year.

The two teams skated off the ice tied for fourth place of the Atlantic Division and with two games remaining in the regular season series – both to be played at the DCU Center.

The Sharks return to home ice Friday night when they host the Pirates for a 7:00 p.m. meeting at the DCU Center. Friday is “Go Red Night” as the Sharks partner with the American Heart Association to raise awareness about Heart Disease and Strokes among women. Fans purchasing tickets at the box office that night will receive a $2 discount by wearing red to the game and mentioning “Go Red Night.” More information on the Sharks upcoming promotional schedule is available by Crashing the Net at the team’s official web site, www.sharksahl.com.
