Sharks can’t hold on in St. John’s
Worcester drops 4th straight game (0-3-1-0) with 3-2 overtime loss to IceCaps
St. John’s NFLD –The Worcester Sharks (3-7-1-0, 7pts) squandered a 2-0 lead after 40 minutes of play and eventually fell in overtime to the St. John’s IceCaps (7-7-1-0, 15pts) by the count of 3-2 in front of 6,287 at the Mile One Centre on Wednesday night to kick off a three game series north of the border in St. John’s. Game two of the three game set is Friday night at 6pm (EST).
Rylan Schwartz scored his 1st goal of the season for the Sharks while Daniil Tarasov scored his team leading 7th goal to lead the way offensively as Worcester dropped their fourth straight game. Andrew Gordon and Jerome Samson scored in the third period for the IceCaps to force overtime before Samson won the game at: 26 for St. John’s in the extra frame.
Rylan Schwartz (1st) gave the Sharks an early 1-0 advantage with a beautiful shorthanded breakaway backhand finish at 2:03 past netminder Eddie Pasquale. Each team fired eight shots on goal as Worcester took a 1-0 advantage into the 1st intermission.
The Sharks struck on the power play in the 2nd period with a rebound score by Daniil Tarasov (7th) at 6:58. Tarasov scored on a second rebound try from the right side after Eddie Pasquale stopped Marek Viedensky and Freddie Hamilton on a flurry in front of the IceCaps net. The middle frame was a feisty one with a scrap between Rob Davison (3rd FM) and Ryan Schnell (4th FM) as the two teams combined for 11 penalties as the Sharks took a 2-0 lead into the 2nd intermission. Rookie netminder Troy Grosenick had 16 saves through 40 minutes.
The IceCaps came out charging in the third period and scored their 1st goal of the evening on a 5-on-3 power play at 5:32 off the stick of Andrew Gordon (3rd) to cut the Sharks lead to 2-1. With the Sharks on the power play, Jerome Samson (3rd) had a nice individual effort with a shorthanded wrap around score past Troy Grosenick at 18:15 to tie the score at 2-2. Worcester was outshot 12-6 in the third period as the game headed to overtime.
In the extra frame, it did not take long for Jerome Samson (4th) to bury a rebound score past Grosenick at: 26 after the Sharks fumbled the puck behind their net to give St. John’s a 3-2 win.
The Sharks overall record falls to 3-7-1-0, 7pts and 1-2-1-0, 3pts on the road.
Notes: Three Stars: 3rd star: Troy Grosenick (27 saves) 2nd star: Eddie Pasquale (23 saves, W) 1st star: Jerome Samson (2-0-2)… Final shots were 30-25 in favor of St. John’s… Eddie Pasquale made 23 saves on 25 shots for St. John’s in his 7th straight start… Troy Grosenick made 27 saves on 29 shots for Worcester in his first professional road start… Worcester went 1-for-7 on the power play while St. John’s went 1-for-7… Dylan Demelo, Lane Scheidl (inj), Matt Pelech (susp), Jimmy Bonneu (inj), and Adam Comrie did not dress for Worcester…Riley Brace played his 1st game with the Sharks after playing two games with the ST Bulls in the ECHL… Matt Pelech served game one of his two game suspension….the Sharks had one fighting major and now have 17 through 11 games…. The Sharks fell to 6-1-1 at the Mile One Centre and have points in four straight games….the shorthanded goal was the 6th allowed by the IceCaps this season (the 2nd vs. Worcester)... the Sharks were the final team in the AHL to play an overtime game this season.
