Some observations I (Eric Lindquist) made during the three day trip;
Daniil Tarasov – was impressive during the two scrimmages and scored perhaps the nicest goal so far. Tarasov spent the last month or so in San Jose to prepare for his first NHL camp. He is definetly on the radar in San Jose.
Rylan Schwartz – heard a lot of good things about him from the rookie tourney in BC and he looked quite comfortable at San Jose Sharks training camp – great poise early on for the rookie. Schwartz also scored a goal in the second scrimmage to tie the game late for Team A.
Matt Pelech – first off…Pelly cut his hair… looks like a new man! Pelech was taking a regular shift during the two scrimmages on a 4th line… and no, he did not crush anyone! (I’m sure he will wait for an exhibition game to do that!).
Matt Nieto – Nieto received a lot of ice time with John McCarthy and Eriah Hayes…. the trio worked well together in the two scrimmages. Nieto also scored a pretty goal in the shootout.
John McCarthy – the Worcester Sharks captain is battling for one of the open spots up front for the San Jose Sharks. J-Mac centered a line with Nieto and Hayes all three days.
Taylor Doherty – Taylor scored a goal in the first scrimmage for Team A and showed a nice jump to his game. The third year pro was paired with veteran Rob Davison.
Matt Irwin – Irwin looks like he has certainly made the jump to the NHL… everything about his game screams NHL. Matt was paired with Dan Boyle and moved the puck extremely well.
Alex Stalock and Harri Sateri – coach Todd McLellan said the two are in a “dog fight” for the #2 spot after practice on Sunday. Harri looked as good as I have ever seen him and he said he felt great. Alex is healthy again and looks like the Stalock that Worcester Sharks fans all know and love!
Brodie Reid – Brodie is healthy again and made some nice moves during both scrimmages. I would expect a healthy Reid to have a big year offensively.
Travis Oleksuk and Sebastian Stalberg – despite both entering their 2nd seasons as a pro, they are both participating in their first NHL training camp because of the lockout last year. Coach Sommer mentioned early he liked what he saw in Oleksuk.
Nick Petrecki – After signing with the Sharks right before training camp, it was good to see Nick back on the ice for the Sharks. Petrecki had the long hair and scruffy look going as he was paired with Matt Tennyson.
Curt Gogol – the agitator scored in the first scrimmage skating on a line with Oleksuk and Reid.
If your favorite Sharks player did not make the list…. It wasn’t because they weren’t playing well or not on the ice… it was only because I either didn’t get the chance to speak with them or I had a meeting when they were on the ice.
One thing is for sure…. I am super excited about the upcoming Worcester Sharks / San Jose Sharks seasons and you should be too! Make sure to check back to SharksAHL.com later this week for the Worcester Sharks training camp schedule and opening roster…. It’s right around the corner!
