8th Annual Community Blood Drive Boasts Record Turn-Out
With another season of hockey fast approaching, Sharks fans flocked to the eighth annual American Red Cross Blood Drive hosted by the SMG-managed DCU Center and the Worcester Sharks. The event, hosted on Friday, September 6th from 10-4, has been an annual tradition for the Sharks organization since arriving in Worcester in 2006.
Donors were treated to snacks and drinks, as well as coupons and tickets for upcoming events at the DCU Center. While the two complimentary regular season game tickets were certainly an incentive for some donors, others, like season ticket holder Heather Stebbins, turned up simply to support the team. “This is my third straight year going to the blood drive,” explained Stebbins. “I think it’s important to give back to the community in any way I can.”
Adam Webster, blood donor recruiter for the American Red Cross, agrees that the importance of donating blood cannot be overemphasized. According to Webster, every pint of blood collected helps up to three hospital patients. Unfortunately, only 5% of the eligible population donates.
The summer season is traditionally the slowest for donation, but it appears volunteers for this blood drive didn’t get the memo. Today’s event boasted a greater turnout than previous years, with over 60 appointments and a great number of walk-ins. “It’s definitely the busiest I’ve seen it,” said Webster, who praised the Worcester Sharks and DCU Center for their partnership with the American Red Cross. “Every little bit helps, and this event is a great way for the Sharks to aid community members in need.”
The whole Sharks staff got in on the action, volunteering at the registration table and the snack station. Even Finz helped out, hanging out with the donors while they waited to be called. Sadly, Finz himself was unable to donate due to the fact that they were not accepting shark blood at today’s event.
Anyone interested in donating blood or volunteering for the Red Cross in the future, please call (800) RED-CROSS or visit http://www.redcrossblood.org/ for more information and don’t forget to come out to the Sharks home opener at the newly-renovated DCU Center on October 19 at 7:00 pm!
