Sharks drop 7th straight in 7-1 loss to Falcons

Matt Nieto extends point streak to three games with an assist (1-2-3)

Worcester, MA– The Worcester Sharks (29-31-2-6, 66pts) dropped their season high 7th straight game (0-6-1-0) with a 7-1 loss to the Springfield Falcons (40-30-2-6, 89pts) on Saturday night in front of 4,746 fans at the DCU Center on March of Dimes Night. With the loss, the Sharks remain nine points behind the 8th place Hershey Bears in the Eastern Conference playoff picture with eight games remaining.

Alex Stalock allowed seven goals on 36 shots and dropped his first game in regulation to the Falcons in his career (12-1-1). Peter Sivak (4th) scored the only goal for Worcester early in the first period but the Falcons scored three in the 2nd and four more in the 3rd period for their 40th win of the season.

Peter Sivak (4th) gave Worcester an early 1-0 lead with a beautiful move and deek down the left wing side past goalie Allen York at 2:09. Rookie Matt Nieto recorded the only assist on the play to extend his point streak to three games (1-2-3). Alex Stalock made 11 saves in the first period as the Sharks led 1-0 through 20 minutes of play.

Springfield broke out to a 3-1 advantage with three goals in the 2nd half of the middle frame. Ryan Russell (9th) at 10:08 and Ryan Craig (20th) at 11:21 each banged home loose rebound scores to put the Falcons ahead 2-1. Sean Collins (9th) fired a one-timer past Stalock after a great feed by Spencer Machacek on the power play at 18:08 to put Springfield up 3-1. The Falcons outshot the Sharks 13-6 in the middle frame.

The Falcons scored four goals in the first ten minutes of the third period to put the game out of reach and outshot Worcester 12-2 in the final frame. Ryan Russell (10th) scored on a break-away at :21, Spencer Machacek (13th) at 7:24 on the power play slammed home a rebound followed by Michael Chaput (11th) at 8:42 and Sean Collins (10th) at 9:34 to bury the Sharks 7-1. Worcester was outshot 12-2 in the final frame.

The Sharks are now 37-21-3 in 61 meetings all-time vs. the Falcons…. Derek Joslin wore #25 and Peter Sivak #17 because the Sharks were wearing a special March Of Dimes jersey.
