March 12, 2013

Hello Shark Fans!
Jake Denver, Worcester Sharks intern here keeping you updated on this week’s games against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. The Sharks continue their four game home stand and will host the Penguins for the first time this season in back to back games on Wednesday, March 13 at 7pm and Friday, March 15 at 7:30pm at the DCU Center.

Let’s take a look at how the Penguins are doing this season and what you can expect to see.

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (32-25-2-1, 67pts) will travel to Worcester in the middle of a season long seven game road trip in which they have gone 2-1-0-0 so far. The Penguins are third in the East Division and sixth in the Eastern Conference. Sitting 12 points behind the conference leaders, the Syracuse Crunch, the Penguins are fighting to stay in playoff contention as they get ready to take on their final 16 games of the season. This will be the second time the two teams meet as the Sharks will look to redeem themselves after a 2-0 loss on Jan 5 in Scranton.

The Penguins attack is led by Chad Kolarik, who has 22 goals and 28 assists for 50 points on the season which is 11th best in the AHL. Kolarik has made an immediate impact for the Penguins after being acquired from the Connecticut Whale mid-season. Kolarik has a nose for finding the back of the net and is good at getting his line mates involved in the attack. Kolarik is accompanied by Trevor Smith for the work load inside their offensive zone by scoring 17 goals and adding 20 assists for 36 points. Forward Riley Holzapfel is third on the team in goals with 16 as you can expect him to have an impact on the games.

Bobby Farnham will make his return to Worcester this week after playing a few games for the Sharks last season and suit up for the Penguins. Farnham is a North Andover, MA native who leads the Penguins with 210 penalty minutes and won’t hesitate to drop the mitts when momentum is needed. Both goaltenders have been playing well between the pipes this season for the Penguins. Starter Jeff Zatkoff has a record of 19-17-0-3 on the season while recording a goals against average of 1.96 and a save percentage of .919. Brad Thiessen has seen some quality time in net for the Penguins as well going 13-10-1-4 on the season. Thiessen has a goals against average of 2.57 and a save percentage of .905.

This week’s upcoming games will be crucial for both the Sharks and the Penguins as the end of the season lurks around the corner and the fight for the playoffs continue. Following this weekend, the Sharks will travel to Scranton on April 19 to close out the four game season series.
