The St John’s Pioneers (6-7-3, 15 points) used three power play goals verse the St. Peter Marian Guardians (4-8-2, 10 points) to win the 7th Annual High School Hockey Clash with a score of 4-2. The player of the game was St. John’s senior defenseman Bryan Hicks who collected two goals and an assist in the game.
St. John’s captain Bryan Nelson started the scoring early for the Pioneers of St. Johns at 4:48 of the first period. Nelson took a low wrist shot from the point on a 5 on 3 power play that slipped past St. Peter Marian’s Ryan Carey to put the Pioneers up 1-0. After the Pioneers converted their first power play, one minute later they would convert again; this time, sophomore Patrick Storer tapped home a rebound to make it 2-0 at 5:45 of the first period. The best chance for the Guardians came when Zach O’Connor was rewarded a penalty but was unable to sneak a backhand attempt past Pioneers’ Mario Pizzeri. At the end of one period St Johns led 2-0 and held a 9 to 5 advantage in shots.
St. Peter Marian would use their first power play opportunity to cut the lead to 2-1. Guardians’ Zach Zona made a nice move along the boards and slipped a pass through the crease, where Connor Leonard tapped home the puck at 5:25 of the second period. St. Johns would capitalize on yet another power play, as Kevin Quinlivan put back a rebound at 6:32 making it 3-1 in favor of the Pioneers. Through two periods St. Johns led 3-1 and held a 15 to 10 advantage in shots.
The Guardians would once again cut the deficit to one goal, as senior Derek Bourque threw a puck at the net that pioneers goaltender Mario Pizzeri had trouble seeing, making it 3-2 St. Johns at 3:09 of the third period. St. Johns’ Bryan Nelson would strike again making it 4-2 St. Johns at 13:07 of the third period. The St. Johns Pioneers outshot the St. Peter Marian Guardians 12 to 9 in the period and 27 to 19 for the game.
