St. Peter Marian set to play St. John’s at the DCU Center on Saturday
The Sharks will host the 6th Annual High School Hockey Classic between St. Peter Marian and St. John’s high school on Saturday at 4pm at the DCU Center before the Sharks take the ice to face off against the Providence Bruins at 7pm. The last time these two division 1 schools met St. John’s defeated St. Peter Marian 2-1 in a Catholic West Hockey Conference game on January 17th.
The St. Peter Marian Guardians (4-7-2) are looking to grab some conference points Saturday and build toward Super 8 contention. The Guardians are 3rd in the Catholic West Hockey Conference with a league record of 0-3-0. After a hard fought 3-3 tie against Matignon on January 26th, the Guardians will try to gain momentum on Saturday and move toward the post season.
Senior forward, Ryan Petit, leads the Guardians in points tallying 4 goals and 6 assists on the season. Zach O’Connor, a senior forward for the Guardians leads the team in scoring with 5 goals. Senior Nate Spinney has helped produce from the point with 2 goals and 4 assists for 6 points. Sophomore goaltender, Ryan Carey, has been solid for the Guardians and has racked up 306 saves while facing 344 shots for a save percentage of .890.
The St. John’s Pioneers (5-7-3) are looking to build on their conference record on Saturday as the continue to hunt for a playoff slot and contention for the Super 8. The Pioneers enter Saturday’s game in 2nd place in the Catholic West Hockey Conference with a league record of 1-1-0. The Pioneers are coming of a 4-3 win against the Shrewsbury Colonials on January 21st and look to continue improving as the regular season winds down and the post season begins.
The Pioneers are led by junior defenseman, Bryan Nelson, who has scored 5 goals and added 7 assists for 12 points this season. Nelson is tied for most goals on the team with senior forward, Chris Coveney, who’s 5 goals and 4 assists makes him second on the team for points with 9 total. Junior goaltender Mario Pizzeri has been solid between the pipes for the Pioneers with 230 saves while facing 271 shots on the season for a .849 save percentage.
Don’t Forget! The Sharks will take the ice against the Providence Bruins following the High School Hockey Classic for the second annual “PINK in the RINK” sponsored by TD bank to benefit the Cup Crusaders and to support breast cancer awareness. The rink will be painted pink and the players will suit up in pink uniforms to support the cause!
