Chiasson leads Panthers past Hawks
Jake Chiasson and Erik Bastarache each recorded two goals for Marlboro

Worcester, MA– The Marlboro Panthers (7-2-0, 14pts) defeated the Hudson Hawks (2-4-3, 7pts) 5-2 in the 5th annual high school hockey clash on Sunday afternoon at the DCU Center. Marlboro was also victorious when the two school’s JV teams met prior to the varsity teams squaring off at noon, besting the Hawks JV team 6-4.

Marlboro was led by the player of the game, Jake Chiasson, who recorded two goals and an assist, including the game-winner that came in the second period. The Panthers also got solid play from Erik Bastarache, who recorded two goals and two assists. Ben Wickelman was solid in net for Marlboro, making key saves down the stretch to clinch the victory. Dan Borella scored both goals for Hudson in the 5-2 loss.

The Hawks took an early lead with a power play goal at 8:21 of the first period, on a deflection by Dan Borella off of a one-timer from the point that beat Marlboro goaltender Ben Wickelman, giving Hudson a 1-0 lead. Hudson goaltender Shane Barry turned aside all eight Panthers shots that he faced in the period, as Marlboro outshot the Hawks 8-7 in the first period of play.

The Panthers got the equalizer just 50 seconds into the second period on a fluke play. Thinking that he’d covered the puck for a whistle, Hudson goalie Shane Barry passed the puck out in front that found the stick of Erik Bastarache, who buried it into an empty cage. Less than three minutes later, the Panthers struck again. After a flurry of chances, Jake Chiasson cleaned up a rebound to the left of Barry, giving Marlboro a 2-1 lead. With 2:30 remaining in the second period it was Chiasson again, taking it coast-to-coast for his second goal of the game, with a wrist shot that beat Barry blocker side, giving Marlboro a 3-1 lead through two periods.

The Panthers kept the pedal to the floor offensively to start the third period, scoring with one second left on their power play opportunity at 1:06 on a shot from the point by defenseman Robert Stamm that found its way to the back of the net, increasing the Marlboro lead to 4-1. The Hawks cut their deficit to two with just over a minute left, when John Dutney made a nice feed to Dan Borella out in front who tapped it past Ben Wickelman for his second goal of the game. However, Marlboro added a late goal to secure a 5-2 victory, when Erik Bastarache deposited a rebound to the back of the net for his second goal of the game, after Shane Barry made a great save.

The Panthers overall record improves to 7-2-0 (14pts in 9gp), while the Hawks fell to 2-4-3 (7pts in 9gp).
