Marlboro vs. Hudson preview

Sharks host 5th annual hockey clash between Hudson and Marlboro this Sunday
By Matt Metcalf

The Worcester Sharks will host the 5th annual hockey clash between the Hudson Hawks (2-3-3) and the Marlboro Panthers (5-2-0) at the DCU Center this Sunday at 12pm, before the Sharks host the Portland Pirates at 3pm. It should be a good battle between the two Quinn Conference rivals, as the Panthers are currently in third, while the Hawks sit at fourth place.

The Marlboro Panthers are led by Jake Chiasson (7-2-9), Steven Lampedecchio (5-3-8), Erik Bastarache (4-3-7), and goaltender Ben Wickleman (3.25, .897). Currently with a record of 5-2, the Panthers have strived in winning close games. Head Coach Mike O’Brien’s team has a goal differential of +5 and has notched four out of their five wins by two goals or less. The Panthers will take on Groton Dunstable Saturday before taking on Hudson at the DCU Center on Sunday. Going into Saturday’s game, Marlboro is 4-1 in their last five games. Marlboro handed Hudson their first regulation loss last year in the 4th annual hockey clash, beating Hudson 4-2 on the DCU Center ice.

Unlike Marlboro, the Hudson Hawks, who captured the division 3 state title at the TD Garden last March, haven’t been as lucky in close games, settling for three ties through eight games already this season. The Hawks are led by Quinn Conference leading scorer Jeff Hamelin (11-9-20), J.D. Dutney (2-12-14), Rocco Malloy (5-4-9), and goaltender Shane Barry (3.13, .880). With a goal differential of +2 despite a record of just 2-3-3, Mike Nanartowich’s team has to be feeling pretty good coming off of a 6-1 win over Fitchburg/Monty Tech on Wednesday. The Hawks will play conference rival Shrewsbury High School (6-1-1) on Saturday afternoon, which should be a good test for them prior to facing off with Marlboro on Sunday.

The DCU Center doors will open at 11:30am with one ticket to get you entry into both games. Don’t miss your chance to catch a great high school rivalry, before watching a physical division battle between the Sharks and Portland Pirates, all for the price of one! As always, kid’s tickets are just $5 with the purchase of an adult ticket. Call 508-929-055 for ticket information!
