Stalock solid in loss to Manchester

Manchester, NH– The Worcester Sharks (14-11-1-2, 31pts) had their three game win streak verse the Manchester Monarchs (14-12-2-2, 32pts) come to an end in 2-1 loss on Wednesday evening in front of 4,993 fans at the Verizon Wireless Arena.

Alex Stalock was solid between the pipes in the loss with 25 saves in Worcester’s 10th straight one goal game (5-4-0-1). James Livingston (2nd) scored the only goal for Worcester in the loss, as the Monarchs used two second period goals to secure the win. The two teams will battle again on Friday at the DCU Center in Worcester at 7:30pm.

Alex Stalock was superb in the first period making 13 saves and keeping Manchester scoreless through the first period. James Livingston (2nd) put home a rebound from a Matt Irwin shot from the point to give the Sharks a 1-0 lead at 9:25. Manchester’s best scoring chance came on the period’s only power play, when Stalock made a unbelievable split save on a Monarchs one timer that came across the crease. The Monarchs outshot the Sharks 13-7 and had the lone power play in the opening frame.

Manchester scored both goals of the second period to take a 2-1 lead. The Monarchs started the scoring when Stefan Legein (2nd) took a shot from the top of the slot and with the help of heavy traffic in front to tie the game at 1-1 at 6:35. Andy Andreoff (4th) came down the right side of Worcester’s zone on a 2-on-1 and slipped a low wrist shot past Stalock to give Manchester a 2-1 lead at 8:30. Through two periods of play Manchester held a 24-17 lead in shots as the Sharks trailed 2-1 after two periods.

The two teams were unable to find the back of the net in the third period as the game remained at 2-1. The Sharks best chance came when a pass from Tim Kennedy sprung John McCarthy on a short break-away but was denied by Peter Maninno at 1:30 in the third period. Worcester was unable to convert on the power play going 0-2 in the period and 0-3 for the game. Worcester outshot Manchester 13-3 in the period and fell 2-1.

The Sharks overall record falls to 14-11-1-2 (31pts in 28gp) 9-6-0-1 (19pts in 16gp) on the road this season.
