A Quick Look Back
10.27.06 Worcester 4 – Portland 2… The Sharks won their first home game of their inaugural season last night by topping the Portland Pirates by a score of 4-2. Forward Mathieu Darche recorded two goals while forwards Joe Pavelski, Graham Mink and Lukas Kaspar all registered two points on the night. The win upped Worcester’s record to 4-2-0-2, and handed the Pirates their first regulation loss of the season. The Sharks now lead the Unum Provident Cup 2-1.
10.28.06 Worcester 5 – Manchester 4… Worcester beat Manchester in a back and forth scoring fest to win their second game in a row for the first time this season. Tom Cavanagh, Grant Stevenson, Scott Ferguson, and Garrett Stafford all recorded their first goals of the season to give the Sharks a balanced scoring attack. The Sharks are now 5-2-0-2 and sit just one point behind Portland atop the Atlantic Division.
Games Ahead
11.4.06 – Worcester vs. Springfield – Mass Mutual Center
The Sharks travel to Springfield to take on the Falcons for the first time this season and their only game this week. Worcester will look to extend their winning streak to three games after beating Portland and Manchester respectively this past weekend. Currently, Springfield is in sixth place in the Atlantic Division with a 3-5-0-0 record and six points, while the Sharks are in second place in the Atlantic with a 5-2-0-2 record and 12 points.
The Darchinator…
Veteran forward Mathieu Darche scored three goals this weekend vs. Portland and Manchester, respectively. Darche scored the game winning goal against Portland and scored his league leading seventh power play goal. In nine games played, the Montreal native has 14 points (11+3=14) and leads all goal scorers with 11. Darche currently owns a plus-seven player rating. Darche has also been nominated for the CCM/ Vector AHL Player of the Week.
Follow the Leader...
Rookie forward Joe Pavelski is still playing follow the leader as he leads the rookie scoring race for the third week in a row in the American Hockey League. Pavelski has 14 points (3+11=14) and is tied for the team lead in points and leads all rookies in the AHL in assists and points.
“Power” bait…
The Sharks went three-for-three on the power play against the Manchester Monarchs on Saturday night. Worcester is ranked third in the American Hockey League on the man-advantage with 14 power play goals. The Sharks currently have a 25.4 percent success rate.
Balanced Attack…
The Sharks received a balanced scoring attack on Friday night in their win against Portland. Tom Cavanagh, Grant Stevenson, Scott Ferguson, and Garrett Stafford all recorded their first goals of the season.
Stone Wall Schaefer…
Sharks netminder Nolan Schaefer recorded his third win of the season vs. the Portland Pirates last night. Schaefer stood on his head making 35 saves for the win and handed Portland their first regulation loss of the season. The Yellow Grass, SK native holds a steady 2.00 GAA and a .922 save percentage on the season.
Season Debut…
Forward Graham Mink made his Sharks debut last night against the Pirates and played on the first line with Mathieu Darche and Joe Pavelski. Mink, who won a Calder Cup last season with the Hershey Bears, registered his first two points of the season with assists. His assists came on both of Darche’s goals in the middle stanza.
