Jason Demers Reassigned from San Jose to Worcester

Jason Demers, a former 2008-09 Worcester Shark was reassigned from San Jose to Worcester on November 28th. He appeared in his first AHL game of the season in Worcester’s 4-1 victory over Bridgeport on Sunday.

The 6-foot-1, 185 lb. defenseman was selected by San Jose in the 2008 NHL entry draft as the #186 pick in the 7th round.

This season in San Jose, Demers has appeared in 27 games, making his debut on October 1st in Colorado. He has gone 1-12-13 with a +/- rating of plus-2 for the Sharks.

His first NHL point was recorded on October 3rd when he assisted, along with Frazer McLaren, Benn Ferriero’s first professional goal. This was the first time in 29 seasons in the NHL that three rookies tallied their first points on the same goal. So far in 2009-10, he is ranked second among NHL rookies in assists.

Demers scored his first NHL goal on Cristobal Huet on November 15th in the Sharks’ 4-3 overtime loss to the Chicago Blackhawks.

After being drafted in 2008, Demers spent his first professional season with San Jose’s AHL affiliate Worcester Sharks. He appeared in 78 regular season games (2-31-33) and 12 playoff contests (0-4-4).

Prior to his professional career, the Dorval, QC, Canada native was a standout member of the QMJHL. He spent two seasons (2004-06) playing for the Moncton Wildcats before going to the Victoriaville Tigres for three seasons. In his final year of junior hockey (2007-08) with the Victoriaville Tigres, Demers doubled his numbers from the season before and was the QMJHL’s leading defensive scorer (9-55-64 in 67 games).

At only 21, Demers should be a huge asset to both Worcester and San Jose. He is known for his ability to read the ice and make plays, and will act as an offensive defenseman who brings NHL leadership to the Worcester bench.
