New Catch: DANNY GROULX
Meet one of the newest members of the San Jose Sharks organization, defenseman Danny Groulx, who was recently signed to a one-year contract with the team. SharksAHL.com will dive into the newest members of the Sharks organization all summer long.
“Danny has been a steady professional with a great deal of experience,” said San Jose Sharks Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Wilson. “He’ll add good depth to the organization and has a wealth of postseason experience at the American Hockey League level.”
The six-foot, 205-pound native of LaSalle, Quebec started his career by playing five seasons in the Quebec Major Junior League (QMJHL) with Val d’Or, Acadie-Bathurst and Victoriaville from 1997-2002. Groulx tallied six points in a game against Cape Breton on 10/5/01, a junior career-high for the defenseman. He scored a junior career-best 112 points, including 83 assists, in 68 games with the Victoriaville Tigers (QMJHL) during his final season in the junior ranks in 2001-02.
Interesting fact: He holds the record for most career points (332) and assists (266) by a defenseman in the QMJHL.
On August 4, 2002, he was signed as a free agent by the Detroit Red Wings and spent the 2002-03 season with their AHL affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins. He made his professional and AHL debut on 10/12/02 against Cleveland and shortly after scored his first AHL goal on 11/27/02 at Hershey.
He remained with Grand Rapids the following two seasons, recording the highest plus/minus (+20) for the team during 2003-04 with a total of 8 goals and 13 assists, his best season for Grand Rapids. After 53 games with the team during 2004-05, Groulx was transferred to the Manitoba Moose. He concluded the season appearing in 16 games, posting 7 points (2g, 5a).
He spent the 2005-06 season in Germany playing in 51 games for the Kassel Huskies of the DEL where he registered the second highest PIM for the team with 93 minutes.
Returning to the AHL for 2006-07, the defenseman signed with the Hamilton Bulldogs where he scored a career-high six playoffs goals and six playoffs assists. The defenseman had a goal and an assist in Hamilton’s 3-1 win in Game Five of the Western Conference Finals over Chicago on 5/26/07 and scored two goals in Game Three of the Calder Cup Finals in Hamilton’s 5-2 win over Hershey on 6/4/07. The Bulldogs eventually went on to win the 2007 Calder Cup Championship.
Interesting fact: He had a point in seven of Hamilton’s first 10 Calder Cup playoff games, totaling (3-4=7).
During his sixth professional season in 2007-08, Danny Groulx signed on with the Manitoba Moose where he registered a career-high 24 points. He chipped in an assist in four straight games from 12/28/07-1/1/08 and scored his 100th career point on 4/2/08 against Chicago. Consistent with his past playoff history, Groulx notched two power-play goals in six Calder Cup postseason games. He finished the regular season with a (4-20=24) record.
He spent last season appearing in all 80 games for the Rockford Icehogs (AHL) as he finished 14th in the league in points by a defenseman and 5th on the team overall for points (6-34=40). He led Rockford in plus/minus (+18) and was third on the team for assists with 34.
Did you know?: Groulx has never been less than a +1 in his six AHL seasons.
Additionally, he has appeared in the Calder Cup Playoffs in all six of his AHL seasons appearing in 55 games and posting 22 points (9-13=22).
This seasoned hockey player has accumulated 130 points (24-106=130) and 403 penalty minutes in 415 regular season AHL games.
Both the San Jose and Worcester Sharks are thrilled to have Danny Groulx on board for the 2009-2010 season and look forward to seeing this dedicated defenseman impress both fans and teammates alike!
