New Catch: JED ORTMEYER

Meet one of the newest members of the San Jose Sharks organization, right wing Jed Ortmeyer, who was recently signed to a one-year contract with the team! SharksAHL.com will dive into the newest members of the San Jose Sharks organization all summer long.

Ortmeyer is expected to battle for a spot in San Jose next season as he adds great depth up front in the Sharks organization.  Read below to find out more about one of the newest members of the Sharks organization!

“Jed is a skilled, two-way player who adds tremendous depth to our organization,” said San Jose Sharks Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Wilson. “He’s the type of player that pushes his teammates and competes with a high level of energy.”

The six-foot, 200-pound native of Omaha, Nebraska started his career by playing junior hockey with the Omaha Lancers for two seasons. During the second, he led the Lancers in goals with 23 and points with 59.

In 1999, he advanced to the University of Michigan (CCHA) where he played for the Wolverines through 2003. He was named team captain during his junior year. On this leadership role, Ortmeyer noted in a 2007 CCHA interview: “I think it's not always what you say but it's more about your actions than anything. People are going to follow leaders that go out there and work hard every day and put their body on the line for the team.” Ortmeyer did just that by tallying 38 points his junior season, his highest of all four years. The sports management and communication major was voted the Best Defensive Forward by the CCHA during the 2002-03 season.

Did you know? : At Michigan, Ortmeyer's teammates included future NHL players Mike Comrie, Jeff Jillson, Andy Hilbert, Mike Cammalleri, Mike Komisarek, Jeff Tambellini and Al Montoya.

The New York Rangers signed Ortmeyer in 2003 as a free agent where he split time between the Rangers and their AHL affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack. He scored his first NHL goal on November 25, 2003 against the Lightning, 10 days after his NHL debut on the 15th. He finished the season with 2 goals and 4 assists. The 2004-2005 season was spent with the Wolf Pack, returning to the Rangers the following season.

An injury sidelined Ortmeyer for the first half of the 2006-07 season, as he eased his way back into the game with the Rangers at the beginning of 2007. During his sixth game back on January 13, 2007, he notched a penalty shot against the Bruins to win the game 3-1.

Interesting fact: After his recovery, Ortmeyer received the Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award for the second time (first in 2003-04), which is a fan-voted award for going “above and beyond the call of duty”.

Ortmeyer, 30, spent the last two seasons with the Nashville Predators organization. He played in 51 games with Nashville in 2007-08 posting eight points (4-4-8) and 32 penalty minutes before suffering a knee injury to his ACL. Upon returning, he spent the majority of the 2008-09 season with Milwaukee (AHL) notching 23 points (10-13-23) and 51 penalty minutes in 55 games. He also appeared in two games with Nashville.

In 230 NHL games with the Rangers and Nashville, he has posted 32 points (13-19-32) and 108 penalty minutes.

The entire San Jose Sharks organization is thrilled to have Jed Ortmeyer on board for the 2009-2010 season and look forward to seeing this dedicated forward impress both fans and teammates alike!
