The Best Of 2007-08: Individual Single-Game Performances
As part of a season review, sharksahl.com is taking a look back at some of the top moments from the Worcester Sharks’ second season. This week, we begin with top individual single-game performances.

Top 5 Individual Single-Game Performances
1. Goaltender Dimitri Patzold earns first shutout in franchise history on Jan. 11 at Providence:
In his return to Worcester from San Jose, Dimitri Patzold stepped right into the lineup at the Dunkin Donuts Center in Providence with the daunting task of shutting down the AHL’s top team. He came out of the evening not only shutting the Bruins down, but making history at the same time. The Sharks rode Patzold’s 25 saves and goals by Riley Armstrong, Devin Setoguchi, and Dennis Packard to the convincing 3-0 victory.

2. Tom Cavanagh scores go-ahead goal in third period at San Antonio (Nov. 9) before picking up the game-winner in overtime:
Tom Cavanagh picked up his first two-goal game of the season in dramatic fashion, first giving Worcester the 4-3 lead midway through the third period. After the Rampage tied the score, he sent the Sharks home with the 5-4 win at 4:42 of overtime.

3. Thomas Greiss makes 41 saves in 2-1 shootout win over Wilkes-Barre Scranton (Dec. 14):
Despite being outshot 42-29, Thomas Greiss single-handedly ended Worcester’s five-game losing skid with a dominant 41-save performance against the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins. He also stopped all five in the shootout, all leading to the 2-1 victory.

4. Mike Iggulden scores hat trick on Mar. 2 vs. Norfolk:
Behind two second-period goals, Mike Iggulden became the only Shark to reach the three-goal plateau in 2007-08. His hat trick was Worcester’s first since Iggulden had three last season (Mar. 31, 2007) at Houston.

5. Steven Zalewski scores game-tying goal in regulation then the game-winning score in overtime at Portland (Apr. 11):
Rookie Steven Zalewski scored his first-career goal at the 13:14 mark of the third period before ending the game with his second goal at 4:39 of the extra session, giving the Sharks their second-straight overtime win over the Pirates. The win meant Worcester finished the season with a .500 or better record against four of the six Atlantic Division Opponents: Springfield (7-3-0-0), Lowell (5-2-2-1), Manchester (5-3-1-1), and Portland (4-4-1-1).

Honorable Mention
*Mike Iggulden scores two goals in third period to force overtime vs. Portland (Jan. 18):
With Worcester trailing the Pirates, 3-1, heading into the third period, the Sharks needed a strong effort to get back into the hockey game. That they would get from Mike Iggulden as he scored a pair of goals to tie the score at the end of regulation. He started at the 4:22 mark on a tremendous individual effort, making a move behind the net and stuffing the puck inside the far post. He then added the tying goal at 13:51 and two more in the shootout. The shootout went to sudden death before highlight-reel goals by Geoff Platt and Bobby Ryan gave Portland the win in seven rounds.

*Graham Mink has a hand in all three Sharks goals in thrilling 3-2 win at Manchester (Dec. 31):
Behind a season-high scoring effort by captain Graham Mink, the Sharks pulled out a thrilling 3-2 News Year’s Eve victory at Manchester. Mink scored in the first and second before assisting on Lukas Kaspar’s game-winner with only three seconds remaining in the game. His two goals and three points finished tied for his season-highs.

*Brad Staubitz finishes with a Gordie Howe Hat Trick at Lowell (Mar. 14):
Brad Staubitz had a night to remember in Worcester’s second-consecutive 6-1 win at the Tsongas Arena in Lowell. He scored a goal, added two assists, and beat Pierre-Luc Leblond in a third-period fight.

*Tom Walsh picks up three assists on Nov. 9 at San Antonio:
Defenseman Tom Walsh finished the night with three assists on Nov. 9 at San Antonio (second period, third period, and overtime), which was the most by a Sharks player in a game this season.

*Derek Joslin records three points (1g, 2a) in the second period vs. Albany (Mar. 7):
After 20 minutes of play, Worcester found itself down 2-1. Needing a big second period, the Sharks got that, especially from defenseman Derek Joslin. Joslin had a hand in all three goals of the period, two of which were on the power play, leading to the 5-3 home win. His three points set a new season-high for a whole game while the two assists tied a high. Joslin also tied the team-high for most assists (2) and points (3) in a period.

*Thomas Greiss makes 36 saves in thrilling 2-1 shootout win over Springfield (Nov. 12):
In a season of wild games vs. Springfield, none was wilder than a home tilt vs. the Falcons on Nov. 12. Dan Spang gave Worcester the 1-0 lead, but Springfield tied the game with only six seconds remaining in regulation. The late goal didn’t phase goaltender Thomas Greiss as he stood tall in the shootout, good for the 2-1 victory.
