Stanley Cup Hopefuls #3 ... Worcester Alumni Lead San Jose To Western Conference Semifinals
SAN JOSE, Calif.- With the 2007-08 Worcester Sharks season complete, the attention now focuses to San Jose where the Sharks are gearing for a run at The Stanley Cup. It’s in San Jose where 11 Worcester alumni are making their mark in hockey’s biggest stage, with no mark bigger than what they left on Tuesday’s night’s 5-3 Game 7 victory over the Calgary Flames. Joe Pavelski (pictured with Worcester last season) and Devin Setoguchi each scored goals to send San Jose to the 4 games to 3 series win and into a second round matchup against the Dallas Stars.
Tom Cavanagh, Thomas Greiss, Derek Joslin, Sandis Ozolinsh, Devin Setoguchi, Tomas Plihal, and Marc-Edouard Vlasic all skated for Worcester at some point this season and are currently in San Jose. Meanwhile, Matt Carle, Torrey Mitchell, Doug Murray, and Joe Pavelski called the DCU Center home in Worcester’s inaugural 2006-07 campaign.
Calgary (the 7 seed in the Western Conference) gave San Jose (the 2 seed) all that they could handle in a classic series that went down to the wire. Momentum shifted from Calgary (2-1 series lead) to San Jose (3-2 series lead) and then back to the Flames (3-3 series) before the Sharks had the last laugh on Tuesday. A former Worcester Shark (Pavelski) finished with the game-winning goal while another (Setoguchi) added a crucial insurance tally.
After the Flames took a 2-1 lead in Game 7, the Sharks answered back with four consecutive goals. Pavelski’s goal came at 14:01 of the second period to give San Jose the 4-2 lead. Setoguchi added his score only 52 seconds later good for the three-goal advantage. Calgary answered back in the third to cut the lead to 5-3, but the Sharks held on for the deciding victory in front of a raucous home crowd
Pavelski finished the series tied for second on the team with seven points (3g, 4a), Setoguchi and Murray each had two (1g, 1a each), while Mitchell had a goal, and Vlasic finished with an assist.

Other Worcester Alumni in the Stanley Cup Playoffs:
Josh Gorges, who played in seven games with Worcester last season, skated in all seven games of Montreal’s 4-3 series win over Boston. The defenseman finished the series with one assist while helping the Canadians get past the feisty Bruins. Gorges and the Canadians now look ahead to a second round matchup against Philadelphia.
